Congrats to Nikita and Bandit for graduating the 4-week Masters Training Program! These two Australian Shepherds are brilliant dogs with high energy and high drive. Before training, both dogs had extreme reactivity towards people and pets nearby. They were known to run wild with no intention of returning to their handlers on call. Since training, they are trusted to not react towards neighbors and visitors. They now can be trusted to run around their farm and recall upon command. Also, both dogs can heel off leash by the owners left and right sides. Well done, Nikita and Bandit!

Gerty, an mix, has graduated the 2-week basic obedience program! This 6 month old pup first arrived with a strong disagreement towards leash walking. She’s since overcome the challenge and walks next to her handler’s side without the pulling and halting that she was once known for. She is well versed on all basic commands and has overcome her fear of new places and faces. Well done Gerty!

Congratulations to Chico for graduating the 1-Week Puppy Foundations Program. Chico benefited greatly from the week here. The 16-week old pup got introduced to the structured life of a dog in training, which is a time-critical component for all dogs around 4 months of age. Between basic obedience training periods, Chico was strategically placed in social situations to bond with puppies of similar size and age, as well as human. What an incredible week in Santa Rosa, CA attending the Dog Reactivity Workshop, as hosted and instructed by the legendary Michael Ellis School for Dog Trainers / Co-hosted by the one and only . Meeting other trainers from around the nation was a blast, as we came together to share training challenges, unique strategies and novel solutions. I brought a dog with me (Scout, 3-yr-old English Springer Spaniel, Rescue, abused) that has become somewhat of a case study for me due to his spontaneous aggression that seemingly has no pattern or “trigger”. He graduated from our 4-Week Master’s program in May ‘24 And is fully trained to all commands. But the periodic outbursts of unprovoked aggression has had me on a year-long project to get to the bottom of a series of questions: is this dog reactive or aggressive? Can aggression be “fixed” in dogs that were severely abused in their early, developmental months of life? If so, to what extent? I will be adding/updating a special blog on our website about Scout and his endeavor to overcome trauma-induced aggression. Special thanks to Scout’s faithful owners for believing in him and entrusting Southeast Off Leash to seek out what is truly possible for dogs in this scenario.

Congratulations to MJ for graduating the 3-Week Advanced Training Program. This 6 month old German Shepherd came for high level obedience training. She made incredible strides in all things obedience: from sits and downs, to off-leash focused heeling. She recalls on command from 250+ yards, maintains commands in high distraction environments, and learned how to control her barking (that is so common with this brilliant breed). Thank you to her owners from the great state of Georgia for trusting Southeast Off Leash to get the job done. Well done, MJ!

Blitz, a Pitbull-Mix, has graduated the 4-Week Masters Program 🙌. Blitz was sent to training alongside his housemate, Rivers (previous post). Blitz is the perfect family dog and thrives on affection. This good boy posed a fun challenge, as he was not easily motivated. Have you ever had a dog that just likes to chill? Never in a hurry, just living on his own time? That is Blitz. Loving yet stubborn. Upon arrival, he did not like to go on walks after 15 steps- he would anchor down into a strong “sit” position to express his preference of not doing anything more than “chillin” 😅. But through positive training methods combined with patience, he completed training with a grin and a tail-wag. He’s trusted off leash, and is one of the sweetest dogs in this town. Way to go, Blitz!

Congratulations to Rivers on graduating from our 4-Week Masters Program! Rivers is a Kelpie, an Australian sheep-dog breed. She’s a high energy, high prey-drive dog with an outstanding work ethic- traits that are to be expected with most working breeds. She first arrived with unwanted reactivity towards new people and dogs alike. But she has left that reactivity in the rear view. This good girl is fully trained on and off the leash in low, medium, and high distraction environments. She has mastered her commands and has overcome her aggressive behaviors through a positive and patient approach. Rivers now recalls without interruption from 150+ yds, heels alongside her handler, maintains engagement, and shows affection with her family to no end. Way to go, Rivers!! 👏👏👏
