Tug of War or Tug for FUN? Read on to learn more about what I think is one of the best ways to interact with your pup or dog. Article by Karen B. London.

True or False: Tug is a great game to play with your dog. According to our resident canine behavior expert, the answer is a resounding “true,” albeit with some caveats. Dogs who like it—which is most of them—get a lot from it; even some who don’t take to it immediately can learn to enjoy i...

A dog's crate should be a safe, kid free space. Building bonds between kids and dogs takes time, patience and active supervision. *Baby shown in photos is a toddler sized doll.*

When setting up success stations it is important to keep some important points in mind. What works in your home for a baby under 3 months may change quickly for a baby at 5 months. Management will change constantly for the first 3 years! How you might ask? Let’s talk about an example. You may have...

Fido's Friday Fun Fact: Dogs use body language to communicate what they are thinking and how they are feeling.

Because dogs don't speak our language, the only way to truly comprehend and communicate with them is for us to understand and appreciate what they are telling us through their body language and vocalizations. Start the process of becoming a doggie detective today! Check out these coloring pages for kids on the Family Paws website.

Doggie detectives gather the clues of how a dog may be feeling by observing their ears, eyes, tails and muzzle. It is clear this dog is uncomfortable, what specifically do you notice that indicates that?

A very late Fido's Friday Fun Fact
We all know that some dogs are fast... but how fast? Get this: a Greyhound could actuallly beat a Cheetah in a long distance race!
According to Psychology Today, Greyhounds are excellent long distance runners and can keep a speed of 35mph for up to 7 miles. Where the Cheetah is incredibly fast it can only keep its speed for around 200 -300 yards, so they may have the running start but it would soon be surpassed by a Greyhound!

Fido's Fun Fact Friday!
Ever heard of vibrissae? “Vibri what???” you may say. Most people have no idea that this word refers to what animal owners popularly call whiskers. These special hairs found on your dog’s muzzle, under his jaw line and above his eyes are quite different from most other hairs on his body. They are anchored deep in the skin and are very stiff. At the base of each vibrissa is a high concentration of touch-sensitive nerve cells. Dogs have trouble seeing detail up close, so they use their vibrissae to sweep the area around them and feel for things in their environment. Vibrissae serve as early warning detection devices and are especially important for dogs that can’t see because they can help prevent blind dogs from bumping into things that could hurt their faces or eyes. Pretty amazing!

🇺🇸 Fido’s Fun Fact Friday 🇺🇸

Did you know that all branches of the United States Armed Forces use trained military dogs?

The list of jobs typically assigned to these highly trained canines is lengthy. Sentry dogs are taught to walk alongside their guard or handler and warn them of danger by growling or barking at approaching strangers. A Scout dog is trained to work silently so that they can detect and alert soldiers to snipers, enemy presence, and ambushes. A Messenger dog carries information between handlers, while Mine Dogs are trained to detect both metallic and non-metallic landmines as well as b***y traps and trip wires. Casualty dogs are your war-time version of a search and rescue who can quickly locate injured soldiers. While Tunnel dogs have been used to explore the confines of underground spaces in order to seek out enemy forces and alert handlers. Explosives Detection dogs have been specifically trained to pick up on the scent of the chemicals used in bombs and alert their handler when those odors hit their noses. Trackers are trained to track and attack enemies on the ground. And Patrol dogs are trained to protect air bases, military compounds, ammunition depots and military checkpoints. Regardless of specialty, it is the job of these highly trained canines to guard and protect our military personnel with courage, loyalty and honor. This Memorial Day, Tails of Success honors and remembers those who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. 🇺🇸

Do Dog’s Dream?

Yes! Ever noticed your dog “running”, making noises or twitching in their sleep? Those sounds and movements are an indicator that your pup’s in her deepest stage of sleep, called REM. REM stands for rapid eye movement and it’s the time during sleep when dreaming occurs.

What do dogs dream about? Since no dog has ever told her owner about a dream she's had, scientists can only guess. They believe it's likely that dogs dream in a similar fashion to humans, replaying everyday activities, like chasing, playing, training and eating.
If you've ever been tempted to wake your dog during a dream, try and resist. Older dogs and puppies need the most sleep, but even dogs in the prime of their life need sleep to remain healthy and happy. Next time you look at your snoozing dog, remember, it's best to "let sleeping dogs lie”. Your pup might just be dreaming that treats are raining from the sky!
