Spaying and neutering is the only way to reduce the number of unwanted dogs and cats. No taxpayer money is used to support our spay/neuter programs. We receive a generous grant from The E. Stuart James Grant Charitable Trust every year and this is what we do with the money:
1. We offer spay/neuter assistance to residents of Danville and Pittsylvania County. Our current amount is $100 for Danville residents and $75 for County residents. The certificate must be picked up at least the day before the animal is taken to the clinic. Call 799-0843 for other guidelines. The amounts are increased during certain times of the year.
2. We offer to give money to veterinary clinics to use the way they determine best meets their clients’ needs. Some offer discounts, some pay a generous amount for clients who have many animals and little money, etc. Some advertise different programs and some do not advertise. Once the check is given, they are responsible for how it is used. We trust them without reservation.
3. For outside cats who live on their owner’s property and receive the legal standards of care, we pay for the surgery and rabies shots. Call 799-0843 to receive more information.
4. We offer to pay for the surgery of mother dogs and cats when people release litters to us or many times when people pick up their animals from the shelter.
5. Our adoption program includes the surgery, rabies shots, and microchip. Currently, the adoption fee is $100 and we recently increased the amount given to clinics to $150. Some clinics require other services, so adopters are encouraged to call their veterinarian and discuss additional fees. We do not favor one clinic over the other.
Since 1984, we have had a variety of spay/neuter programs. Since 1993, we have spent over $1 million of grant money for that purpose.
