Graduation at Tractor Supply in Blairs

Manners II did their last class at the Blairs store. Great training through the store, both outside and inside, by the six dogs and their handlers. Proud of everybody's progress including my Ruby, in the capable hands of Ocean 🙂

This is Chelsea. She is a 3-year hound mix available for adoption from the Lynchburg Humane Society.

Yesterday I did a one-hour presentation with Chelsea at the LHS facility for a group of about 20 camp kids.

Chelsea did such a good job being my "demo dog." We had never met each other before. Initially a little excited, understandably, but she settled in for the full hour. At the end the kids came up, two at a time, to greet Chelsea, which she loved! Never jumped on anybody, but wagged her tail the entire time.
Chelsea would make a great family pet.

The Place Master

Ruby learned "Place" this week. Place means go to the mat pointed to, lie down and stay there until released. It means stay in a Down position on the mat even when your person walks away and is engaged elsewhere. It is a Stay with components of distance, duration and distraction.

Summit is the Place Master. Since Ruby often will mirror what Summit does, I first had Summit Place, to show Ruby how it was done. Next Ruby and Summit Placed together, sharing the same mat. It wasn't long before Ruby would Place solo, even when I wandered away. We need to do more practice though and get it solid.

If you have an experienced dog it can greatly facilitate training an inexperienced one. If you are fortunate enough to have one 🙂
