Thank you all SO INCREDIBLY MUCH for all the encouragement this year. It truly means so much!

I will miss Laney but I know she will thrive with Colby until she finds her forever place!

Laney’s entire Health and Ground Manners class.

We skipped a few things and tweaked the way we did others. She tried hard for me, & that’s all I can ask of her!

Why did you sign up to compete in Heart of the Horse?
I’ve been asked that question a few times.

There are a couple answers:

It’s a great challenge for myself to put my skills to the test against other great trainers! Having the public watch each step of your training is definitely very ‘intimidating’. Everybody has an opinion and odds are it’s different than yours.

I think the most important one- I’ve always had a ‘soft spot’ for ‘rescue’ animals. Giving them a better chance at life & helping them recover mentally & physically from whatever they’ve gone through.

While yes, winning is on everyone’s mind and it’s a great target to have BUT the entire ‘point’ or ‘end game’ of this competition is to show people what rescue horses are capable of.

We are here to showcase HOW FAR these horses have come.

Is Laney ready for this? She could definitely be better.

Will I put her in a situation that she’s not ready for? No, but I WILL push her boundaries a little bit and see how far we can go.
Sometimes -lack of better words - throwing your horse into the fire is good for them.

Now, if I feel Laney is getting too overwhelmed I will definitely excuse ourselves. I just don’t see a reason not to let her try. We’ve come this far already, we’re going to finish strong!

Laney’s last required check in post.

I can’t believe how fast this time has gone by.

I wish we had more time together. She is breaking down her walls for me but, this girl is tough.

Whatever her past held, it wasn’t filled with kind people. Not saying she was abused or anything but people are not on her list of things she wants to hang out with.

She is getting SO much better but she will take a patient and gentle handler to help continue building her trust.

More times than not she is great.
She does still have some unpredictable moments and due to that is why we haven’t been able to graduate to under saddle yet.

I was really hoping to but we unfortunately ran out of days in our time together.

But that’s ok there has been SO much more on the ground she still needs to conquer anyways!

Laney has amazing potential, it is going to take the right trainer/person to get her there.

I have learned a ton from Laney & I’m grateful for the things she’s taught me.

The hard thing about older horses is they have all these other things they have acquired in their brains over the years- they sometimes revert back to their old habits even when being taught new ways.

Laney still reverts back to her old self sometimes- and that’s ok! It’s ONLY been 4 months. Think about that- that’s NOT a lot of time. Add in our snow days, rain days, sick days, the numbers go away fast. Which is why every day counts so much with these guys.

I’m hopeful my time with her has helped set her up for success wherever her path takes her.
