When Zahra’s family walked through the door last Friday, they never expected their world to change in an instant.
They found their sweet girl suddenly unable to use her back legs. Just hours before, Zahra was the same happy, spunky, active pup her family knew and loved. The kind of dog who brought endless personality, energy, and joy into every day. Then, without warning, everything changed.
Zahra is a beloved member of our Love in the Lead family, and we have had the privilege of watching her grow, learn, and thrive through her training journey with us. Seeing a pup who was once running, playing, and enjoying life suddenly face such a scary diagnosis has been heartbreaking.
After an emergency visit, Zahra was diagnosed with Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD), a painful condition that affects the spine when a disc between the vertebrae ruptures or bulges and puts pressure on the spinal cord.
IVDD can range from mild discomfort and weakness to sudden paralysis, like what happened with Zahra. Treatment depends on the severity and can include strict rest, pain management, anti-inflammatory medications, rehabilitation, physical therapy, and sometimes emergency surgery to relieve pressure on the spinal cord.
For a dog as active and full of life as Zahra, this unexpected journey has been incredibly challenging. But she is still showing that same fighting spirit and sweet personality that makes her so special.
Her family is doing everything they can to give her the best chance at recovery, but the road ahead includes emergency care, diagnostics, ongoing treatments, and rehabilitation, which can quickly become overwhelming financially.
