A year ago to the day, Herman had his vision, I’m sure. I hope he got to see something beautiful that day, but I very much doubt it.

That’s a place my head goes often “A year ago” and it’ll be a while yet before Herman’s year ago looks good. I think by late winter we’ll be able to say “A year ago she saved you” “A year ago they treated your wounds” and sometime in late April we’ll say “A year ago we met”

But until then, we’re setting the stage, and next September we’ll say “A year ago you were the guest of honor at a little girls birthday party”

Memories like these, and a future like this, are only possible because of Forgotten, Now Family Rescue and the incredible work they do.

You’ve heard of NePoPo but have you tried iFAFO?

I changed up my approach a little and it’s working wonders.

This was purely experimental and generally not in the first round of things I would try. But Slaton has been here for weeks and the whole “Gentle reassurance” thing wasn’t getting him to unlock and stop being a stress ball.

So I started teasing him?

The first time I stopped with the careful movements, gave him a hip check and tore off across the yard like a mad lad…He was actually into it.

Poking at him when he doesn’t expect it, doing the human equivalent of a play bow with some human zoomies…and he’s unlocked.

No more tail between the legs, no more tight body language. He’s loose and engaging, which I think is going to put us in a great space for training.

Again, this is NOT something I’d recommend on a lot of dogs, please don’t go put a bite on some poor dog because Rick’s a weirdo…but dang if a little old fashioned grab assin hasn’t worked wonders for Slaton 😂

Sunday nights are Herman’s nights. We often do a free for all with the pups when the tiny humans go to bed, but Sundays are for Herman.

Tonight he’s enjoying Superman.

Anyway. Freya is kicking butt at her service dog prep work. Despite their contributions to the worlds plummet into darkness, Lowe’s remains a great spot to prep this sort of training.

In all honesty the skiddish behavior could be because his previous owner abused the hell out of him, and when saved him he had a collar imbedded so far into his neck he looked like a pez dispenser.

It could be his genetics. Could be a bit of both.

But in my experience with humans and dogs, a focus on past trauma does little to provide the coping tools needed to grow and have a more fulfilled future.

So Slaton is getting lots of love and patience…but he’s also getting training, he’s learning boundaries and he’s learning productive ways to deal with everything going on in his mind.

Slaton deserves a chance. He deserves love…but in the words of one of my favorite role models

We love them by leading them.

🚨 UPDATE: MISSING BATTLE BUDDY – PLEASE HELP 🚨

Thanks to the support of our community, we were able to uncover some additional information. It’s a complicated situation that we are still working through, but what we know right now is that Max, the Battle Buddy, is missing.

Max is a male husky with blue eyes and reddish fur. His coat may be shorter than a typical husky because he has been shaved before (we know, huskies should never be shaved, ever).

📍 Last known area: Charlotte, NC

👉 Important details:
• Max knows his name and will usually respond if called.
• Like many huskies, he may run if chased.
• The safest way to approach is to squat down low, call his name, and let him come to you.
• He is very treat-driven.

⚠️ Out of the 50+ Charlie Mike Battle Buddies we’ve matched with veterans through our program, this is the first time we have ever faced a situation like this. We are deeply concerned and need the community’s help.

‼️No questions asked — if you have Max or know where he is, we just want him back safe. A monetary reward may be available if needed.

We urgently need the Charlotte community’s eyes and ears to help get Max home safely. If you see him or have any information, please contact us immediately.
