Wednesday (4/2) Noon Update from the City of Charlevoix
In the past few minutes, Consumers Energy and ITC have reenergized the transmission line serving the City of Charlevoix. Our linemen are at our substations to begin the process for bringing the first of our 12 system circuits online. The first circuit energized will include Charlevoix Hospital. It takes about 45 minutes for each circuit to be reenergized assuming all goes well.
We understand national guard troops are being deployed by the State of Michigan to parts of Charlevoix County and the rest of northern Michigan to assist with storm damage clean-up and recovery.
The Charlevoix Area Community Pool is open for hot showers for those who need them. It is free but donations are welcome. Community Reformed Church is open for shelter until 5pm today and everyday 9-5. The Charlevoix Township Northside Fire Station is open 24/7. If you need a ride to these or any other shelter in Charlevoix County, please call Charlevoix County Transit at 231-373-3940.
Stay safe by following smart safety tips and utilizing emergency services when needed:
· Carbon monoxide poisoning and death are some of the biggest dangers in a storm like this. Do not run generators or outdoor heating elements indoors. It’s always a good time to check the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
· Check whether you left any appliances, lights, and other electronic items on to ensure they are safe when power is restored.
· Limit travel and watch for falling branches, ice, and downed power lines. Assume any wire is live.
· Do not pass emergency vehicles, electric crews, or barriers.
· Lake Charlevoix EMS is available for medical issues and emergencies, including low oxygen levels.

Afternoon Update from the City of Charlevoix
We have been advised by ITC and Consumers Energy that they are working on the lines that connect us to the broader grid and we are now cautiously optimistic for a return to service for most of our electric customers in the next 12-24 hours. Given the nature of this storm, more trees could fall and changing temperatures could cause conditions to worsen or new branches and trees to fall. Mt. McSauba Road has reopened with significant debris still on the shoulders. Our crews are continuing to assess line conditions and you will see our staff throughout the neighborhoods doing line inspections both in vehicles and on foot in some cases. Many trees are extremely fragile; warmer temperatures and wind will cause more problems.

City of Charlevoix has retained Asplundh to do tree and branch removals over the next few days. This crew will be looking at trees today and start work tomorrow morning. This kind of storm is very damaging and problematic for trees and some clean-up work will not be pretty however it is necessary to restore electricity.

Charlevoix County Emergency Management and Sheriff Vondra were able to help us secure an additional generator for maintaining our lift stations. We appreciate your continued efforts to limit water use though our plants and systems continue to function safely.

The Charlevoix Food Pantry will be open this evening from 5-7pm and will provide essentials to those in need. They are located on W. Hurlbut Street.

We have not issued a run water advisory but you should be mindful of how your pipes are installed in your home and the temperature in your home.

· Lake Charlevoix EMS is available for medical issues and emergencies, including low oxygen levels.

Ideally, the next update you get from us will be lights coming on in your home and on your street. We’ll continue to add more information as it is relevant.

Noon Update from the City of Charlevoix
City of Charlevoix Crews are currently working to restore significant damage along Mt. McSauba Road including installing three new power poles and stringing wire. We believe most of the rest of our local grid is ready once ITC and Consumers are able to restore power to our system. We continue to await estimates from them on when this may be though we believe progress has been made in restoring the many faults throughout the statewide grid. Current reports suggest there are more than 300,000 people without power in Michigan.

Charlevoix County has declared a State of Emergency and this will bring additional resources from the state to the area as they are available.

City Hall has limited generator power but no phones, internet, or heat. If you need to contact us, please stop in or call 911 with any kind of emergency whether it is a wire down, water or sewer issue, or medical problem. Crews are ready to assist. If you know of an elderly or homebound neighbor, it’s a good time to check on them if you are able. We have placed power strips in the City Hall Lobby; please help yourself if you need to charge your phone but bring your own charging port and cable.

We have also begun brush clearing but this will take days and weeks to complete. Many trees remain fragile while they are ice-covered. It is best to stay inside and avoid unnecessary travel.
