Pet Helpers is a nonprofit 501(c)3 Rescue and Adoption Center that serves communities across the Lowcountry. Our mission is to end the euthanasia of all adoptable cats and dogs by keeping all animals until adopted; providing low cost spay/neuter surgeries; offering humane education programs; pursuing animal-cruelty prosecution; and initiating animal-welfare legislation. We also have a high quality

, low-cost Spay/Neuter Center that is open to the public. We offer vaccines, heartworm prevention/treatment, general surgeries, and routine medical care for your pet. Pet Helpers’ vision is to offer affordable, spay/neuter services and access basic wellness services to families across the Lowcountry. We offer these services to the general public but also focus aggressively on communities with high rates of animal reproduction and pets belonging to low-income populations. Increased accessibility to affordable spay neuter services and basic wellness care will reduce pet overpopulation and help to keep animals out of the shelter system.

We wish finding the perfect dog was as simple as checking a few boxes.

✔ Housebroken
✔ Good with kids
✔ Good with dogs
✔ Good with cats

But dogs aren't boxes.

They're personalities, quirks, favorite toys, zoomies around the living room, and the way they greet you after a long day. They're individuals, and their stories are often much bigger than what can fit on a website profile.

That's why you may sometimes see our pets listed as "unknown" or notice they don't receive a "yes" for every category. In many cases, that doesn't mean the answer is "no" - it means we'd rather be honest than make promises we can't guarantee.

Many of our pets arrive as strays and we're often learning about them during their first few days in an entirely new environment.

The reality is that SHELTER life is very DIFFERENT from HOME life. Every family, routine, and environment is unique, and some things simply can't be known with complete certainty until a pet settles into a home.

That's why the best matches aren't made by website filters alone.

They're made through conversations, meet-and-greets, shared observations, and taking the time to understand what both a family and a pet need to succeed together.

Because a website can tell part of a dog's story.

But not all of it.

❤️ Meet the dog. Not the checked box.

This is not a post we ever hoped to write.

Effective June 1, Pet Helpers has implemented a temporary moratorium on canine intake.

For months, our team has been caring for more than 100 dogs at a time—despite being designed to house just 39. We've expanded foster programs, partnered with rescues, increased adoption efforts, and recently launched the Homeward Bound Adoption Campaign with Charleston County (adoption fees sponsored for animals 4+ months old to Charleston County residents) to help more pets find homes.

This temporary pause allows us to focus on providing the humane care, medical attention, enrichment, and support that the animals already in our care deserve.

While these efforts have provided some help, dogs continue to enter our care faster than they are leaving.

As difficult as this decision is, we must prioritize the health, safety, and well-being of the animals already depending on us. This temporary pause will allow us to reduce our population to a sustainable level and continue providing the quality care every pet deserves.

If you find a lost dog, please:
🐾 Check for identification tags
🐾 Have the dog scanned for a microchip
🐾 Post on local lost-and-found pet pages, Nextdoor, and PawBoost
🐾 Contact your local animal control agency if you cannot safely house the dog

While we are unable to accept canine intakes at this time, our team can still assist with microchip scanning, lost-and-found resources, courtesy postings, and guidance to help reunite lost pets with their families.

The fastest way to help us resume normal operations is to help animals leave the shelter. Please consider adopting, fostering, or sharing our adoptable pets.

Thank you for standing with us as we take this necessary step to protect the welfare of the animals who depend on us every day. ❤️

🚨 WANTED: Dog Momagers & Dadagers 🚨

Some just need someone willing to brag about them.

We’re looking for Ambassador Fosters—the people who turn “just a foster dog” into the star of every conversation.

The ones who take them to the coffee shop.
The ones who stop for every stranger who says, “Can I pet your dog?”
The ones who post photos, share updates, and proudly become that person who won’t stop talking about their foster.

Because that’s how dogs get adopted.

🔹You become their test home.
🔹Their confidence coach.
🔹Their biggest cheerleader.
🔹Their temporary family.

You help us learn who they really are outside the shelter. Do they love kids? Snuggle on the couch? Prefer being the only pet? Dream of brewery patios and neighborhood walks?

These are the details that help them find the right forever home.

And yes… you’ll probably fall in love.

And yes… it will be hard when they leave.

But those tears mean something. They mean you gave them exactly what they needed. You helped them become ready for forever.

Right now, we urgently need Ambassador Fosters to help free up space in the shelter and give dogs a chance to thrive outside of a kennel. Some are struggling with the noise. Some need to be the only pet. Some have never experienced life in a real home.

We provide EVERYTHING:
✔ Food
✔ Supplies
✔ Medical care
✔ Support

You provide:
❤️ The space
❤️ The time
❤️ The love

Be the reason a shelter dog finally gets to say, “I’m home.”

Interested? Email [email protected] today!

📸 Featured here is Frank, one of our Ambassador Foster success stories.

His foster didn’t just give him a place to stay. They became his personal marketing team, chauffeur, hype squad, therapist, life coach, and unpaid publicist.

The result?

We got to know the real Frank.
