This week was filled with sweet pups! They all have different issues and are also in different stages of their problems. One has back pain that has resolved so we are on a maintenance schedule, one has seizures which are chronic and ongoing, and one has a brachial plexus avulsion which is from recent trauma. Hopefully we can help them all!

Archie is a sweet old yellow lab mix and Dooey is his little pug brother who just can’t help but make himself the center of attention. Technically, Archie is my patient but Dooey has made me fall in love with a pug for the first time. At first, he just wanted to get in on the action and snuggle with his buddy but then he realized that I have treats in my bag. Now he spends the entire appointment in my bag trying to get the treats out. 😆 I love seeing these pups regularly! Archie really benefits from his electro-acupuncture treatments for his arthritis. We also give him his Adequan injection in acupuncture points for a little added boost.

Ursula injured her cranial crucuate ligament recently and her owner is trying to avoid surgery so we are doing acupuncture and Chinese herbs to help her body heal. She also has some back pain which may be secondary to the hind leg issues. Ursula is a bit wary of strangers but she does great for her treatments. She is a little nervous when I first get there and then she relaxes when the needles are in and pretty much snoozes through her treatment. Her stamina and exercise tolerance are gradually improving so she is on the road to recovery!

This little cutie giving me the intense side eye is Reese! She loves her mom and she loves chicken breast, but she does not love me! 😆 Reese is a 14 year old chihuahua with some mobility issues affecting her back and legs and she has some kidney issues as well which she receives Chinese herbs for. This was her second acupuncture treatment and we did MUCH better than her first treatment. We realized that she does better being carried in this position by her mom while being distracted by a big chunk of chicken breast. She did great for this treatment! We were able to get a lot more needles in and they all stayed in for 20 minutes. Sometimes it just takes a couple of tries to figure out what works best for each pet!

This week I was lucky enough to see 4 kitty patients, which is alot for me! Leo was my last kitty of the week and he was such a good boy for his treatment. He is a young guy who has been suffering from immune mediated joint disease and has been taking alot of steroids recently. His mom was wanting to find a way to treat him that was a bit more natural so we started acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine for him 2 weeks ago. He is already feeling better and his steroid dosage has been lowered slightly which we will continue to do gradually as long as he continues to do well. He really loves Churu kitty treats and even was nice enough to share with his sister Joni during his treatment today!

Luna (🐶) and Cheese (🐱) are good friends and I’m lucky enough to see them on a regular basis. Luna has degenerative myelopathy, which causes a progressive loss of function to the rear legs and often causes incontinence as well. We are trying to slow down this loss of function and also reduce any back and front leg muscular pain that often happens as those muscles compensate. Cheese is a sweet kitten who loves his big sister and is always present for her electro-acupuncture sessions. This is the first time he slowed down enough to snuggle with her though! Love this family! 💞

If I’ve ever done an acupuncture treatment on your pet, then you know I am a bit obsessive about counting my needles before I go to make sure I have them all. And if I am missing one, I will look in every crack and crevice of the room we are in (much to some people’s dismay 🤣) because sometimes those needles end up in really wacky places. Well this one took the cake! This Minnie Mouse toy was under a Great Dane’s chest when I couldn’t find a needle I had placed by her neck. I started methodically going through blankets that were under her and then pulled this toy out and ta-da! There was the needle poking into her face. Apparently Minnie is having sinus problems this week and needed some relief! 🤣

Today I saw Jack for the first time and we tried something that was very new to me: acupuncture on my lap! Jack loves sitting on laps, especially when it’s the lap of someone he doesn’t know….like me! He has been having some mobility and constipation issues lately, and his mom wants to do everything possible to make sure Jack is comfy and healthy. Acupuncture can help with any joint and back pain he is experiencing so he is more comfortable getting in and out of the litter box and posturing to defecate. While Jack didn’t stay on my lap for the whole treatment, he was a pleasure, and I can’t wait to see him again!

This fuzzy little guy is Cash and believe it or not, we weren’t sure we would be able to accomplish an acupuncture treatment when I saw him today for the first time. He can be a bit wary of strangers and protective of his mom but he got used to me while I was getting his history from his mom, and it turns out he really likes to lay on his back on her lap. This means I couldn’t access some commonly used acupuncture points along his back but I could access all four feet and lower legs and also his head, all of which have some powerful acupuncture points. I’ve circled some of the needles in the second photo since they are hard to see. These points are helpful for liver issues, pain and diseases local to the feet. Cash has been suffering with allergic skin disease for a long time (especially on his feet), despite all his mom’s best efforts so we are giving Chinese medicine a try!

It’s almost like seeing in triple vision! Luna (in the foreground) receives weekly acupuncture treatments to help her mobility issues. Two of her siblings lounge around hoping for snacks while she has her treatment, waiting patiently for it to be over. Their mom definitely has a thing for Shepherds as this isn’t even the whole crew!

This is Kali, a sweet Beagle mix, whom I see regularly for acupuncture treatments to help alleviate back pain. I wasn’t so sure we would be able to complete a successful treatment the first time I met her. She is a very active and animated dog when you first meet her and I was worried she wouldn’t be able to hold still for a 20 minute treatment. Boy was I wrong! She plops down on her bed, lets me use as many needles as I’d like, and pretty much zones out for 20 minutes. Never judge a book by its cover! 🐶 🙂😴
