PlowGirl Farm

PlowGirl Farm Earth-Friendly Agriculture PlowGirl Farm practices earth-friendly, sustainable agriculture on a simple eight-acre plot just west of Chapel Hill.

We grow a wide range of vegetables and specialize in heirloom tomatoes, shiitake mushrooms and culinary ginger. Dingo Dog Brewing Company, a non-profit whose proceeds benefit companion animal rescue, is located in our barn. Together we've created a zero-waste facility utilizing "ugly" produce for brewing and composted spent grain and gray water for fertilizer. We also maintain bee hives and share

the land with rescued animals including three goats. We work with nature, not against it, and tend the crops with a “less is more” philosophy.

These tiny spiders will soon consume insects that are harmful to plants. Natural pest control! Come see me at market on Saturday and grab some butternuts before they're gone.

If you have logs, check on them. Baby shrooms are popping, mostly on older logs. Snow Cap shiitakes produce in the fall and winter months but with all the rain and cooler temps they'll sometimes fruit early. These won't be ready for Saturday market but I'll have beautiful butternuts, peppers, eggplant and more.

No market this week, there's still clean up and recovery work needed in the wet fields. But not all is lost. I fared better than many and my heart goes out to those who were hit hard by the rains. I'll be back next week. For now, I'm gonna stop and smell the gardenias.

Many farms have taken a hard hit from the recent tropical storm and suffered crop, home and infrastructure damage. On top of that, Tuesday market is cancelled due to the floods. When farm sales are most, if not all of your income missing one market is tough on the wallet. We need to get things up and running, fast. Our market van which holds equipment, tents, tables, merch etc. was submerged in 4 feet of water and needs to be replaced as soon as possible. If you're able and would like to donate you can learn more here:

Poblano and sweet green frying peppers, Italian and Asian eggplant, green beans, potatoes and more on Saturday's table. Loyal market supporter Robin Bayer made poblano peppers stuffed with roasted potatoes and eggplant in a curry sauce. Here's her recipe.
The sauce: 2TBSP curry powder in about 1.5 cups of coconut milk reduced down to about 1/2 of its original volume. Fill the peppers with roasted veggies and sauce and pop into an air fryer for about 20 min to soften up the peppers. Serves up nicely either warm or cold - great as a funky fusion side dish for a picnic.

I saw Jean-Luc in town the other day. He's a regular at market so say hello if you see him. He's a mighty good boy. I'll have new potatoes (get them while they last), lots of Poblano peppers, a variety of gorgeous eggplant and more on Saturday morning.
