A momentous day! Our first official happy adoption day! 👏🏼👏🏼🥳

2 of our female kittens found their furever home with Melodie! Their adoption fees were waived by the generosity of Love Big Like Nate!

We still have 3 cute furballs in our care plus 3 being fostered by a wonderful cat mom right now. Help us make room for more! Purring snuggles and fun await you!

Grace wants to thank everyone who donated or shared her fundraiser! Because of you, her lifesaving treatment is covered and ensures her humans at Castaways can keep expanding and saving other dogs like her!

Grace wants to also let you know that while she is receiving treatment, she would very much like to find a family. ❤️

Hello friends and supporters! We have dogs and some kittens now (!) needing to find homes. Please check our website for more info. But most importantly we have our first shelter dog, Grace, that needs to start her heartworm treatment after testing positive for heartworms. This is a costly expense and we are hoping you could help us! Having a treatable but costly condition makes Grace's chances for adoptions much lower. She is so sweet she deserves a chance at a beautiful life. By treating her heartworms, she can start off on the right paw with a new family!

We would like you to welcome our two newest pups! Mr. Wonderful now known was "Tuck" and Bill came to us with different circumstances. Tuck was coming up on the end of his stay in Chanute and Bill's beloved owner passed away.

Tuck is a gentle giant and has been described as a doll! He is fully vaccinated and ready for a home! He is calm and observant with a hearty appetite for love and food!

Bill is an old soul (8 years old in fact!) and is characterized by his soulful eyes and his tongue that hangs out the side! Bill would be a wonderful companion to a household not wanting to go through the toddler and teenager stage of dogs, but wanting an established dog that wants to keep calm and cuddle. His uncle would love to see this beloved family pet go to a wonderful and loving home as he was a cherished family member for many years.

Our website has all dogs listed for adoption! We are intaking dogs at the rate we are able to and have not yet started intaking cats. You can reach out to us via Facebook or email to get on our waitlist. Thank you for your patience and understanding!

All 3 of our ladies are getting spayed this week and will be available for adoption! They've been so good at the shelter with us and we truly hope they can find a home to call their own.

Penny- dalmation mix- loves to play fetch with her squeaky toy, enjoys cuddles and attention, prefers to follow you around versus being cooped up in her kennel. A rescue from La Harpe we were able to save. Up to date on vaccinations and is microchipped.

Grace- black lab mix- our first shelter resident! She loves to run around with Pippa and play. Grace has really come out of her shell with us and is the playful lab you would expect. She is heartworm positive meaning she will require treatment that we are beginning. Don't let that intimidate you, she very much still needs a family to love her. We would love to discuss how we can help if you decide to adopt her. She is vaccinated and microchipped.

Pippa- black lab/terrier mix- She is tiny but mighty! This girl is fast! We haven't been able to find her owners so we have taken over her care. She loves to play with Grace and go on walks. She would easily curl up with you on the couch if she could. She is vaccinated and microchipped.

All 3 dogs need you! Please give them consideration they lovingly deserve. As we try to intake more animals, successful adoptions are instrumental. Please see link for adoption application if you are interested! Also remember- ALL 3 DOGS HAVE WAIVED ADOPTIONS FEES thanks to the big hearts at Love Big Like Nate!!

Castaways Animal Shelter extends our heartfelt thanks to a local Animal Rescue for their tremendous donation of dog and cat food, along with a generous supply of treats. Your thoughtfulness will directly benefit the animals in our care and help offset vital operational costs.

We are deeply grateful for your support—and so are the tails wagging and whiskers twitching with excitement! It’s acts of kindness like yours that truly show the power of community and highlight the benefits of animal welfare networking.

This is pawsome!

A little May update from the Board of Directors-

During the month of April, preparing for our official opening, we took in 3 shelter residents, we named Grace, Pippa and Penny. All will be available for adoption soon after their surgeries next week! Our board has been learning and training and volunteers are learning as we speak. We have begun a waitlist and our plan is to intake 2 more dogs for the month of May and then reassess where we are. This number is something we determined is feasible especially since one of our dogs, Grace, tested positive for heartworms. A costly treatment regimen is now something we must face and adapt to, while knowing this decreases her chances of finding a forever home while still undergoing treatment- all factors that contribute to how many residents we take in as we try to grow, financially and operationally.

Medical costs, especially for dogs and cats with no known medical history and that haven't been spayed and neutered can easily cost around $200-$300 per intake. Along with monthly preventives, these costs will add up and can quickly overwhelm.

Recurring monthly donations, even at $10-$25 a month, will add up and help offset shelter costs that include medical needs while allowing us to look forward to hiring staff. This expansion will serve the dogs and cats already on our waitlist by allowing us to expand operations. We have plans for building other revenue sources through fundraising, grants and other soon to be named small projects, but we are starting here where the bedrock of our financial stability lies, private funding.

If you are willing and able, a link has been provided for you to conveniently set up recurring monthly donations, or if you make a one time donation you can state where you would like your funds to go. We have 3 spays scheduled next week that you could sponsor or you could tell us you'd like for your contribution to go towards Grace's heartworm treatment. The possibilities are unlimited and your support will have a lasting impact in all facets of Castaways.

Thank you from the Board of Castaways, Grace, Pippa and Penny

What is Castaways?

Castaways Animal Shelter and Sanctuary was originally founded in 2004. The original founders saw a need for a non-kill animal shelter that provided a safe haven until they could be adopted. Castaways was formed as a 501(c)3 organization in order to pursue a non-profit organizational structure to shelter cats and dogs in Neosho County and beyond. From 2004-2016, Castaways was focused on raising funds to build a shelter facility and in 2016, groundbreaking commenced after land was donated on Harper Rd, east of Chanute. With continued support and new partnerships, Castaways will become a reality in 2019.

Mission-

To shelter, protect and advocate for animals.
