TAKE ME HOME TUESDAY: VINCE
Vince is a sable collie boy that is about six years old, and he is quickly learning how to enjoy life! When he came into Collie Rescue, he was about 15 lbs underweight, did not understand how to play, and wasn't really sure what steps were. Vince now has a very healthy appetite and has filled out nicely. He loves to run and play, and has quite a bit of energy. He'll need some leash training, since he will pull and bark when he sees other dogs on a walk. Vince follows his foster family everywhere -- super eager to please others and be close to people who care for him.

are so precious that it can be tempting to adopt two together instead of just one. After all, who wouldn't want twice the cuteness? But while raising two puppies at once might seem like a good idea, it runs the risk of causing long-term behavioral problems due to .

In an interview with Texas A&M University Today, Harmony Diers, a veterinary technician at the university's School of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, says that “littermate syndrome refers to a specific set of unfavorable behaviors that two puppies might exhibit if raised together immediately after weaning from their mother, like anxiety or fear." It happens when a develops such a close during important socialization stages that they are prevented from bonding as closely with their owner(s).

Littermate syndrome can affect puppies of any breed(s), as well as puppies from the same litter or even two close in age from different litters. According to Diers, littermate syndrome isn't "a guaranteed outcome of raising two puppies together," but it occurs more often than not.

Common behaviors seen in puppies affected by littermate syndrome include:

🐾 Separation anxiety when away from the other puppy
🐾 Fear of new people, animals, objects, or experiences
🐾 Fear aggression, which manifests as reacting by barking, biting or trying to escape
🐾 Reactivity when on a leash
🐾 Fighting habits when they reach sexual maturity (around 6 months of age)
🐾 Aggression or nervousness in the more dominant puppy; timidity and withdrawal in the less dominant puppy

Littermate syndrome can be prevented if owners are active in raising the pups and spend plenty of one-on-one bonding and training time with each puppy. That said, it does require immense dedication and commitment on the owners' part.

Congratulations to CRI alum Gracie on her achievement. We love hearing updates on how our pups are doing in their forever homes.
