Not Just a Number: Why Shelter Dogs Deserve a Second Look

The Onion recently joked that shelter dogs are “grateful to be part of the euthanasia process.” It’s satire—but the heartbreak behind it is all too real.

The truth is, many dogs don’t “show well” in shelters. They’re scared, shut down, or overwhelmed by the chaos. But that’s not who they are, it’s who they’ve had to become to survive.

I met one of those dogs. Her name was Joan. Reactive, barking, and probably close to being labeled “unadoptable.” But something clicked. After a few visits to Cumberland Valley Animal Shelter, I took a chance.

Today, Joan is Star—my loyal sidekick, my heart dog, and living proof that the magic happens after adoption.

✨ That shy pup? Turns into a cuddle bug.
✨ That anxious dog? Becomes your hiking buddy.
✨ That overlooked senior? The gentlest soul you’ll ever meet.

Don’t let a kennel define a dog. Ask about the ones who get passed over. Give them a chance. You might just meet your best friend.

Bonnie was surrendered to the shelter when she was not longer useful to her breeder. She is a 4-year-old Labrador Retriever. She is a sweet girl that would love to find a loving forever home where she can be a part of the family! She weighs 75 pounds. Bonnie loves being with you and enjoys going on walks! She loves playing in the play yard as well! Bonnie did test positive for Lyme and is currently being treated due to displaying symptoms. She does seem to enjoy the company of other dogs and does not seem to mind being around cats, although supervision is recommended at first until a relationship is established for cats. Bonnie has been spayed, vaccinated, dewormed, Heartworm/Lyme tested, and microchipped since her arrival at the shelter.

Come on out to Tractor Supply in Chambersburg today 10-2, let's get some tails wagging and fill our truck with donations!

Needed items for the Cumberland Valley Animal Shelter - CVAS are Purina dog, puppy, cat and kitten dry food, rabbit food, soft dog treats, HE laundry detergent, trash bags (13 & 55 gallon) and feline litter/equine bedding pellets.

This Saturday, April 19th, the Tractor Supply in Chambersburg will be hosting an adoption event featuring the Cumberland Valley Animal Shelter and MoonLit Acres Rescue. The event will be held from 10-2.

Come out to meet adoptable pups and kittens and learn about adopting.

We will also be there collecting donations for the shelter.

A Representative from the shelter will be there to talk about the Second Chance fund also.

Additionally, bring your own pups out for a treat tasting event by Tractor Supply.
