About nine years ago, my boss was disinterested in looking at a resume and handed it to me. I read it and thought, “this kid’s resume looks a lot like mine did at his age.”

Except it was, ya know, better.

Then five years ago, I was in the throes of a mad plan to open a veterinary hospital. I thought the world of that young man, so I asked if he would come work for me.

Since then, the hospital opened, and he and some of the other young people who’ve worked for me have moved on.

I couldn’t be prouder of them.

Tyler graduates from today. Sam (happy birthday!) begins his clinical rotations there this month. Shahzad just completed his freshman year.

Ashley successfully passed her insurance licensing examination.

Claire graduated college and took a position as a pediatric nurse.

Michaela graduated college and hasn’t made up her mind yet.

Collin graduated high school early and is headed to St. Joe’s.

I knew them when their parents had to drive them to work. I knew them when they got accepted to college. I knew them when they achieved their goals and saw them make their dreams come true, while they helped me do the same for mine.

I count myself as incredibly fortunate to have been a part of their path. Old Ridge was so lucky to have them.

A special congratulations to Dr. Tyler Wyatt. You deserve every bit of your success. You have earned it many times over.

Wednesday, April 23rd is National Book Day. Which is basically Christmas for Doc, but this year we’re going to honor it like it’s Kwanzaa or Hannukah, with seven or eight days of celebration. (12 Days of Christmas is out, I’m too late for that.)

Keep an eye on our page this week and next for some fun stuff! Book giveaways are kind of up my alley.

One of my favorite things to do at the hospital is host students.

A local Girl Scout Troop joined us for some surgery training and a STEM merit badge! The young ladies were kind enough to bring toys to donate to the local Toys for Tots box too!

It’s with great pride and quite a bit of sadness that we bid goodbye to Ashley.

To me, one of the most important, most impressive things that a person can do is learn and grow.

Ashley took a job in a two-month old startup business she knew nothing about, right after high school, and during the pandemic. I think some folks (not us) told her she wouldn’t last a week in the hospital.

This remarkable young woman learned medicine, anesthesia, dentistry, and the operations of a veterinary hospital and small business. She threw herself into every aspect of it, learned everything she could, and grew into the role.

And, of course, she has grown beyond it.

Jobs never last forever, and not because the job was too much for her, but because the job couldn’t grow as much as she has.

Tremendously proud of Ashley, and deeply grateful for the thousands of animals to whom she’s helped provide medical care. She will always be a part of Old Ridge Veterinary Hospital and, I hope, it will always be a part of her too.

What could possibly be better than a gym in Olde Ridge Village? A BOOKSTORE!

Happy to welcome with their books and antiques and more as our neighbors!

And, c’mon, it’s a bookstore, you can bet I was eagerly their first customer!

Hey folks! Did you know that my dad (you call him Doc) is lecturing at the European Congress of Veterinary Internal Medicine in Lyon, France the first week of September? His keynote is on Friday, September 6th!

We’re very proud and all, but it means he’ll be out all week - mom and I are going for moral support.

If you need help beforehand, this is the week to get it done!

He’s working extra hours this week in case you need anything! (I think he’s maybe just procrastinating writing that speech but it’s a nice gesture.)

We at Old Ridge Vet definitely DO NOT support the chomping, devouring, or consumption of cats no matter how flippin’ cute you are or how much the kitty appears to be enjoying himself.

Congratulations and goodbye to two of our longtime technicians, Shahzad and Claire.

Both have been with us for almost the whole life of the hospital. And we’re so incredibly proud to say that they’re both off to fulfill their dreams. Claire starts her career as a pediatric nurse and Shahzad is off to his dream school of Cornell University.

We will dearly miss them and we were so very lucky to have been a part of their respective journeys.

Watching these young people grow and achieve their goals is a privilege and an honor.

It’s also Claire’s birthday today! Happy birthday, Claire! Many happy returns of the day!

Four years ago today, in the middle of the pandemic, I took a wild, crazy, stupid risk and opened a veterinary hospital in my hometown.

The building once held a paint-and-sip and a hobby shop. I never visited Pinot’s Palette, but my much younger self was happy to spend his allowance on matchbox cars and model trains. Little did I know what was to come.

Old Ridge Vet Hospital has been a major part of my life, but I feel like I’m just a small part of its story.

There is no ORVH without the love and support of my family, of my wife, of my friends, of friends of friends, of my employees, and of my clients. We have over two thousand clients, many of whom were or have become friends along the way. It’s just an idea, a fanciful notion, a pipe dream but for the literally thousands of people who make it real.

Because of you, we get to spend our days making lives a little bit better. Not a day goes by when we don’t change a life for the better, by preventing disease, by curing the sick, by alleviating pain, and sometimes we get the chance to genuinely save a life. I think the world’s a better place for the animals who love us, and I’m lucky I get to help take care of them.

I’m very grateful to all of you who let me live my dream job everyday. You are who make this place wonderful and extraordinary. I promise to continue to work hard to be worthy of the love and the trust and the support you offer me.

From the bottom of my heart, I thank you.

Congratulations to our very own Liam Kiser for his acceptance to and enrollment in the Royal (Dick) School in Edinburgh, Scotland!

Liam is the THIRD member of ORVH’s original employees to attend veterinary school and the first to head to the UK. I won’t shy from saying that helped us find each other in the first place, and we were lucky to have him. I’ve always been grateful for his help and friendship.

Proud of you, Liam!
