Here is our day 2 of stay while walk around. It looks significantly better. Still not there all the way but she is starting to get the concept.

I am using a platform to help keep her still and delivering treats to her as I walk behind to help her be successful. Once she is "accidentally" successful enough times she will have learned what I am trying to ask and I will be able to remove those.

We often need to help make the picture clear for our dog so they can be successful.

I have been thinking of posting some training sessions with my pups. It isnt all the pretty end picture. There is work in between.

Here Solar is working on staying while I walk around her. She struggles with this because she wants to move and do more fun stuff.

This is our day one.

I always get questions about puppies, like how do I get them to stop this annoying thing

🐶 Biting the broom
🐶 Chasing the vaccum
🐶 Getting into the dishwasher
🐶 Biting my pants when I am getting dressed
🐶 Stealing my socks

If we make a big deal about it though it becomes more important to the puppy.

People want a training plan, however I dont actually do training in the normal sense around these situations. I use management and giving my puppy a better activity to do. No formal training just baby gates and puzzle toys.

Solar absolutely loves the dishwasher. There are food bowls and she loves climbing. However I dont want her helping me. If I get upset and make a big deal about it she wants to get into it more because it must be real exciting if I get excited when she climbs in.

Instead I just give her a puzzle toy or have my husband watch her when I am doing dishes and she started coming up after her puzzle toy and sitting next to dishwasher instead of jumping in. So I said she was a good girl and refilled her puzzle toy.

Now she cares less about the dishwasher and I can do chores in peace.

It was simple and easy and much less work than a training plan.

When you get a puppy, one thing we need to remember is to relax and laugh.

Puppies are a lot of work, stressful, and annoying. They are often screaming, biting us, or trying to destroy our house.

But it doesn't last forever. They are only this young once so try to cherish the moments and laugh every once in a while instead of pulling out your hair.

They do something you dont like but relax, laugh it off, and then prevent it from happening in the future.

I have been hiding shoes from Solara in the cat tree. Apparently, she can climb into it now and she just has a nice bed to chew shoes 😂. I will be moving the shoes and soon she will be too big to get on the cat tree (which I got for my small dogs anyway) so it's not a problem.

The first two dogs I got were big dogs. After that I got a small dog and it changed my life. Growing up my family made fun of small dogs saying they weren’t real or they were aggressive and mean. And I got a chihuahua, the classic dog people tend to hate on. He was the best dog ever. The world however often scared him. Large dogs and people towered over him. Tossing a normal sized tennis ball wasn’t fun but terrifying for him since it would seriously hurt him if he got hit. My other dogs loved him but the fact that they weighted 1000% more than him made it challenging at times.

I remember when he was young, my golden retriever tried to get on the couch next to him and lay down and cuddle. Just stepping on the couch, caused my chihuahua to slide towards my golden so when his butt hit the seat it also caused him to sit on my poor 5lb dog. He yelped in pain and fear and went racing for me. Was my golden trying to hurt him? No. However even with the best intentions he hurt him accidentally. That is what small dogs deal with every day. Small incidents hurting them due to the world not being built for them.

It is no surprised when he started displaying some growling when a large dog would approach him when he was trying to sleep on the couch. He was scared of getting sat on again. We don’t like growling so often our first instinct is to yell at the dog. However yelling at a scared dog can actually make the situation worse. Then he will be scared of getting sat on and yelled at. Instead I focused on making him feel safe. I actually worked with the big dogs and taught them not to approach him if he was sleeping on the couch.

Safety is often something we take for granted that is often missing from our small dogs' lives. My large dogs found his growling just as cute and non threatening as your average person. My goal for my dogs before any training and asking them to do any silly tricks us humans like, such as sit, is to make sure they feel safe.

Have you heard of small dog syndrome? Is it real?

Small dogs see the world different due to their size. It is a scarier place full of people who laugh at your fear. Most people refer to small dog syndrome meaning small dogs are aggressive due to their size. I think it is that people don't respect small dogs and their boundaries. Focusing on small dogs or any dog feeling safe is the best thing we can do.

Adolescence occurs between six months and 18 months of age—a time when guardians typically struggle the most with their dogs. Some guardians are so overwhelmed and underprepared for this developmental stage of their dog’s life, they choose to surrender the dog to a local shelter or rescue group. In a recent study published in the Journal of Applied Animal Welfare Science found that the majority of the surrendered dogs (47.7 percent) ) were between 5 months and 3 years of age (M.D. Salman,John G. New, Jr.,Janet M. Scarlett,Philip H. Kass,Rebecca Ruch-Gallie &Suzanne Hetts, 2010)

The neurobiology of adolescence is fascinating, with some key events that alter both the structure and function of the brain.

During canine adolescence, changing s*x hormones effect the animals stress responses. Adolescent dogs have a decreased ability to process information they are receiving from the environment including the presence of dogs, vehicles, people, or really anything around them. They behave in ways that might feel frustrating or upsetting for the dog’s person.

The connectivity between the frontal cortex (responsible for decision making) and amygdala (responsible for emotional processing) decreases, resulting in less behavioral control. We see increased risk taking and more sensitivity to fear.

So what does this mean? This could mean that what was once no big deal to the dog now feels scary; what was once easy to do is now stressful; what once made sense is now confusing. At times, the world can feel like ‘too much’ for the adolescent dog.

As your puppy undergoes this transition into adulthood their inner world is intense, even chaotic. Many pet owners experience an increase in undesirable behavior and find themselves becoming increasingly frustrated. In turn, our own frustration and impatience can cause us to act unpredictably. This adds to our puppy’s inner turmoil. When the inside and the outside are both unpredictable it can be difficult for our dogs to adjust.

If you have an adolescent dog, what can you do? You can give your dog the time and space to observe what is going on around them when on leash at a distance away from the activity when possible. You can give your dog long walks to sniff and explore in nature, giving their brain time to decompress. You can offer your dog a quiet space to sleep so that they can consolidate memories effectively. You can continue training various skills, breaking them down into easier steps that can be generously reinforced.

By understanding what our adolescent dog is experiencing we gain greater compassion and understanding. When we approach adolescence with patience we create a world that is predictable and gentle so our puppies grow up to be their best adult selves.
