Are you wrestling with the challenge of getting your horse to accept nutritional supplements? You're in good company; it's a common hurdle for many horse owners. Whether you're adding a new supplement into the mix or your horse is naturally selective, rest assured there are effective strategies to encourage even the most selective horses to accept their supplements.
1) One Step at a Time, It can be tempting to rush into feeding your horse the full dose of their supplement right off the bat. However, patience is the key here. Regardless of whether your horse is an established fussy eater or not, why not start by offering just 1/4 of the recommended serving? If that goes down well, you can gradually increase to 1/3, then 1/2, and so on until you reach the full serving. No need to rush, it’s perfectly fine if it takes 10-14 days to reach the full serving.
2) Keep It Moist: Most of our supplements come as a powder, not pellets. Why? Simple, powder best preserves nutritional content, as opposed to pellets. But we understand loose and dry texture can be tricky on the palette. Not to worry! Here's a handy tip to overcome that - just add a little water to your horse's feed along with the supplements. This simple tweak can make all the difference.
3) Sweeten the Deal: Is your horse still turning up their nose at their supplements? Let's add some flavor intrigue to the mix! You might consider including molasses, honey, applesauce, or apple juice in.
Or adding our Essential E oil might be just the thing. Not only does it offer the bonus of Vitamin E in your horse's feed, but horses also love the taste!
4) Patience Prevails: Whichever method you settle on for supplement feeding, bear in mind that every worthwhile effort requires time. If you keep at it, stay the same pace, and are patient with your horse, supplement feeding success is just within sight!
