As a trainer there are just some horses that, no matter how much work you put into them, still carry the potential to do something dangerous. Even if it takes years for that moment to happen, you can feel it’s still in there. Rather than waste an owner’s time or give them false confidence in a “fixed” horse, I’d rather be honest and send them home.

This happened with one horse I had that was a chronic bucker. I got him to the point where he stopped bucking, but I could never shake the feeling that it was still in him. Even though he seemed fine, I didn’t feel right sending him home and telling his owner he was fixed. So I sent him home early and told her I didn’t feel like he was safe enough for her to ride, I recommended just turning him out and letting him retire early, knowing she needed a safe honest horse.

She later sent him to another trainer and reported back that he was doing amazing was finally “fixed”. I was genuinely happy for her, and honestly relieved that I might have been wrong.

But about a year later, as she was riding him he completely lost his mind, and bucked her off, breaking her ribs and sending her to the hospital. After that, she turned him out to pasture and said she was done riding him.

I hated that she got hurt. But I also felt a strange peace in my original decision to send him home. That situation reinforced for me that sometimes the best thing a trainer can do is just be honest, cut losses and send the horse back.

First catch job for this killer mare! We had the opportunity to school on her last year for 90 days and she’s back in the line up for some outside education and experience only a day’s work can give. One that’s cowy with a big stop sure makes everything fun!
