We are open! Use caution and care if you are coming by. Main streets are clear, but there may be some residual slippery spots until the sun can catch up.

We do not anticipate closing early. We will be closely watching the weather and emergency conditions for the early part of next week.

In the meantime, tips for your animals are as follows;

Make certain they have sufficient shelter. They should be able to get out of the wind and out of the cold and out of the wet.

Make certain you have their medications and any special food they may need that will last till the middle part of next week.

Remember, walking on snow, ice, and salt can be damaging to their paws. Not only that, once the salt gets on their paws, they may decide to clean those paws and could be ingesting salt and other chemicals that could be harmful. Have dry towels and wipes ready to clean their paws.

No long walks on salted pavement!

Some dogs will refuse to relieve themselves in snow and ice. When possible, clear a spot where they typically relieve themselves so they may be likely to do so when you take them out.

In addition, we are sharing this list of helpful suggestions for the humans in their lives.

This is why I become so upset and angry when people refer to any animal control as a “high kill shelter.”

If it were true, would this guy have been rescued, told he was a “good boy,” gotten treatment, and plunked down into the life he now has?

Absolutely not.

Thank you to animal control, Shannon Hicks, and Dr. Hughes and the staff of Polk Veterinary Care for knowing a good dog when one is presented who deserves the chance for a forever home.

Thank you, also, for the adopters who opened their home and welcomed a new family member.

Dr. Hughes and the staff of Polk Veterinary Care are wishing you and yours a happy and healthy holiday season. Whether it is Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, or any other variation, we are sending the warmest of wishes.

Our office will be closed on December 24, 25, and 26.

Feel free to share pictures of your family and pets in their Christmas finery as we celebrate the season. We have added a few to get you started.

This is important information. While helping wildlife feels like the right thing to do, this is not the way to go about it.

Picking up injured wildlife is never a good idea. This action put the person who picked up the animal and all of those who subsequently came into contact with the animal in serious jeopardy.

In a situation such as this, always contact animal control or another organization better equipped to safely deal with it.
