Who doesn't love a "gentle giant"?

Perry isn't really "giant" by giant standards. He weighs about 58 lbs, but I swear, his head weighs at least half of that. And it's quite endearing when he lays that sweet, heavy head in your lap and falls asleep with a contented sigh.

If a dog ever had a heart of gold, it would be Perry. Friendly, gentle, loving and eager to please, he is a rescue favorite. Maybe it's the cuddles and kisses he readily administers. Maybe it's his good-natured patience when the pups "dog pile" on top of him. Maybe it's his fantastic leash-walking manners that makes outings and neighborhood strolls with him effortless and serene. Heart of gold, aye.

Perry is vaccinated, crate trained, microchipped, and treat motivated. He already knows sit, down and leave it, and he's the kind of quick learner who seems genuinely proud of himself every time he gets it right.

There's something special about a dog who balances playfulness with genuine connection, independence with affection. Perry has that balance. He doesn't just exist in your home. He becomes part of your rhythm, your routine, your everyday joy.

While Perry is happy and enriched with his life at AHDR, what he really craves is a family and home of his own. And a lap to lay that big, beautiful head upon and show his love.

šŸ’› Want to make a huge difference in a dog's life? šŸ’›

Meet Feller and Dixie. Two incredibly special 1-year-old Lab Mixes who have already overcome so much in their short lives.

Their first year was spent in a heartbreaking hoarding situation. They lived outdoors with very little human interaction and none of the normal puppy experiences most dogs get to enjoy. No walks. No visitors. No cozy couch naps. Just the same property, day after day, unsure of the world beyond it. Because of that, they came into rescue understandably fearful and uncertain about people and life outside of what they knew.

And yetā€¦ look at them now.

Since being rescued, Feller and Dixie have been quietly and courageously learning what it means to feel safe, loved, and happy. Theyā€™ve discovered toys, learned that treats are wonderful, and their playful personalities are starting to shine through more each day.

Now, we would love to find foster homes for these sweet pups so they can continue growing and healing while they wait for their forever families. They do not need to be fostered together, but each would thrive in a home with a fenced yard, a calm, confident dog friend to show them the ropes, and a patient person willing to continue showing them they are safe and loved.

Feller and Dixie are cat friendly, crate trained, house trained, vaccinated, microchipped, and up to date on preventatives.

PERSONAL ā€“ FIRE DOG HERO: Hey everyone, as you know, I rarely post anything personal on my private social media pages or on Almost Home Dog Rescue NC . As so many people are reaching out and itā€™s impossible for me to get back to everyone in a timely manner, Iā€™ve decided to share my story.

At around 5am on June 8th I heard Bing Crosby, one of our rescue dogs barking frantically. At first, I thought he might be alerting us to wildlife, but I quickly realized something was wrong as it was still dark outside. When I ran into the Living Room, I saw significant flames shooting up from our outdoor grill area which is auto fed by an underground propane tank. Our fire alarms had not yet gone off but Bing recognized the danger immediately. My husband tried to put out the fire with an extinguisher while I called 911 but it was too late. Thanks to our dog, we were able to get out safely before flames engulfed much of our home and found their way to our attic to move across the house. Firefighters from Cedar Mountain, Connestee Falls, Brevard, Little River, Hendersonville and even Asheville worked tirelessly for at least 6 hours to save what they could of our dream home. At this point, itā€™s been determined that 1/3 of the home will need to be completely rebuilt and the remainder needs to be taken down to the studs due to smoke, soot and water damage.

Is this a catastrophe? Yes, in my little world. But I also feel blessed like never before. Friends, family, neighbors, our rescue staff, volunteers, adopters and supporters have been with me every step of the way from ensuring the dogs at the rescue donā€™t miss a beat to bringing food and combing through personal belongings to see what might be salvageable. I thank God, Bing, the firefighters and each and every one of you for your love and kindness. If youā€™ve messaged, I promise to get back with you when I can. In the meantime, I hope this update will suffice.

People are asking how they can help. Simply caring and praying for our continued strength is more than enough. Well, that and perhaps sharing our adoptable dogs so we can find them the homes they deserve. Who knows? There is a Bing out there for everyone.

Handsome, athletic and freckled gentleman seeks family or individual with loads of love to give!

At just 6 months old, Hughey is a striking Pointer Mix with one of the most unforgettable faces around. A smart and inquisitive pup, he has quickly learned his basic commands, took to crate-training with ease and is working on his leash walking skills.

Hugheyā€™s favorite activity? Curling up in his humansā€™ laps and gazing up at them with those soulful eyes that say, ā€œLet's stay together forever, OK?ā€ He truly is happiest when heā€™s right beside his people, soaking up all the attention and love.

But that doesn't mean that he's a sedentary boy. Hughey loves to romp and play, explores trails with his nose to the ground, and sprints around his fenced yard with pure joy on his freckled face. Great with kids, he would thrive in an active household. He's also been cat-tested with our resident kitty and was standoffish and disinterested (every cat's dream, right?)
