Cedar Grove Veterinary Services History of Cedar Grove Veterinary Services Cedar Grove Veterinary Services was founded in 1945 by Dr. Clarence Meeusen. Baker, Dommer, and Schaetzl.

For years the primarily large animal practitioner was able to provide service from his own home. In 1974, Dr. Meeusen had the foresight to build a veterinary clinic that would allow an expanded companion animal practice when the need arose. Dr. Ron Hinze joined the business in 1976 to meet the farm population needs. Dr. Mike Demianiuk joined the group in 1981 to help with both the farm clientele a

nd enhance companion animal medical service. Companion animal veterinary care was provided in the afternoon. Dr. Vic Getson replaced the retiring Dr. Meeusen in 1984 and provided service for both the farm and companion animal clients. As the companion animal portion of the veterinary business grew, Dr. Robin Baker was hired in 1987 to meet the need of the dairy farmers and the expanding small animal services. In 2000, Dr. Diane Dommer was hired and once again the small animal clientele needs could be expanded without sacrificing care provided to the dairy clientele. Dr. Dana Pionek joined the doctor staff in 2004 as a large-animal veterinarian to continue the quality medicine that the clinic was based on since 1945. In 2005, the owners elected to remodel and add an addition onto the original clinic. This would allow for more efficient service and a higher quality of care for our clientele. Dr. Lindley Reilly joined the practice in 2014 as a large animal veterinarian with a strong interest in dairy medicine and has become very knowledgeable in small ruminant veterinary care since joining the team. In 2019, Dr. Nicki Schaetzl was hired as the clinic anticipated the retirement of Dr. Demianuik. Dr. Schaetzl has a special interest in pocket pet/small mammal medicine in addition to traditional companion pets. Dr. Collin Wimmler joined the practice in 2020 as Dr. Hinze was preparing to retire. Dr. Wimmler has a strong background in beef cattle along with dairy production medicine. Dr. Getson retired from the practice in the fall of 2020. Today, all six veterinarians serve the agricultural community treating a variety of animals - dairy, beef, pigs, sheep, goats, and llama's. Companion animals (dogs, cats, ferrets, rabbits, and pocket pets) are treated by Drs.

Happy June Dairy Month! Have you thanked a dairy farmer yet?

Fun Fact: There are approximately 49,000 dairy farms and nearly 500 milk processing plants in the US. All 50 states and Puerto Rico have dairy farms. It takes 48 hours for milk to reach the grocery store shelves after leaving the farm.

So please remember that the next time you are drinking some milk. 2% of the population is working hard to feed the other 98% and they are getting milk to the store in the same time it takes Amazon to deliver something to your house.

Happy June Dairy Month! Have you ever eaten foods that are just too spicy?

Fun fact: Milk is better for relief after eating spicy foods than drinking water. Peppers that are spicy are measured on the Scoville scale which is a reflection of the amount of capsaicin it contains. The higher on the scale, the more capsaicin, the spicier the food. Milk contains casein, a protein, that breaks down capsaicin. It works similar to soap cutting through grease. Since it is the milk protein that is important, low fat or full fat milk can be equally relieving to drink after eating spicy food . However, this also means that milk substitutes such as almond milk or oat milk won't work because they don't contain casein proteins.

That is nearly 3/4-mile long. 1,700 town residents helped out by holding the cheese for the measurements. The piece of cheese weighed 500lbs and equated to nearly 30,000 individual cheese sticks.

Happy June Dairy Month! Do you think of dairy products as being healthy for you?

Fun Fact: Dairy products contain nutrients your body needs. For example, milk, cheese and yogurt contain protein, calcium, and vitamin B12, which help rebuild and repair muscle tissue, maintain strong bones, and keep your nervous system healthy. Every cup of milk contains protein, selenium, and vitamins A and D, which supports a healthy immune system. Drinking milk also reduces the acidity in your mouth which combats plaque formation and reduces risk of cavities.

Finally, GLP-1 products for treatment of diabetes and use for weight loss are increasing demand for dairy by curving cravings for processed fatty and sugary foods to more protein rich foods. As a result, foods like yogurt and cottage cheese are seeing a resurgence in popularity due to this change.

Happy June Dairy Month! Would you want to live on a dairy farm in the Swiss Alps?

Fun Fact: As picturesque as it would appear, dairy farming in the Swiss Alps has its own unique challenges. That animals typically graze high in the mountains in the summer, which can provide very uneven terrain and unpredictable weather. Additionally, they still need to be able to milk them on a regular basis.

Speaking of winter, cows can only graze in the warmer months in the Alps. Therefore farmers need to go to lower fields on the mountain to make hay and bring it back to their farm to store for winter feeding.

Finally, there are 300 wolves that are in the area that are proving to be very troublesome to the dairy herds well being and safety in the Alps. Animals often wear Bella to help keep tabs on them when they are on pasture.

Happy June Dairy Month! What is awesome on a hot day? Ice cream. What is even better? Ice Cream cake. Who makes the best ice cream cake? (Love to hear everyone's thoughts, but the correct answer is always Dairy Queen 😉)

Fun fact: The origin of the ice cream cake dates back to the 14th century. The Renaissance has a version that was more like a trifle, but it had the early makings of the modern ice cream cake. It was comprised of fluffy, sweet biscuits dolloped with homemade cream. In the Victorian era is when trifles started being made with molds to give them more shape and a closer resemblance to an ice cream cake.

Modern ice cream cakes became popular in 1970 when cakes like Fudgie the Whale from Carvel became very iconic. Today, many popular ice cream shops like Baskin Robbins, Dairy Queen, Friendly's, and Cold Stone Creamery create and sell ice cream cakes.

Happy June Dairy Month! If you were stranded somewhere and could only eat one type of cheese for the rest of your life, which cheese would it be? 🧀

Fun fact: There are around 2000 different varieties of cheese that are made around the world.

The most popular cheese in Italy is Parmigiano- Reggiano cheese. It is considered the King of Cheeses. It is great in pastas and salads

In France, the most popular cheese is Camembert. This cheese is similar to Brie and is a soft cheese. This cheese is often enjoyed on its own or as part of a charcuterie board.

In Germany, the most popular cheese is Allgau Emmental cheese. This cheese is also known as Bavarian Swiss cheese. It is distinct because of the holes in the semi hard cheese.

In the US, the most popular cheese is Mozzarella because of the amount of pizza that is eaten. Cheddar cheese is also popular and cheddar cheese curds are a unique product in the US, especially Wisconsin.

Happy June Dairy Month! Would you consider cows graceful animals?

Fun fact: While cows can walk up a set of stairs, they can’t easily walk downstairs. The incline and size of the stairs are not made for cows. Cows are bigger with a different body build than humans, so it is difficult to take the stairs when gravity makes you feel like you are about to fall headfirst with every step. They will do it if they must, though, so do not taunt them unless you’re ready for an annoyed cow to prove you wrong.

Happy June Dairy Month! Have you ever tried a goat milk product such as fluid milk, cheese, or soap?

Fun fact: It is currently the last day of National Dairy Goat Awareness week and we can't celebrate June Dairy Month without acknowledging that milk can come from other animals in addition to cows.

Dairy goats will produce 0.5-3 gallons of milk per day. Goats can also efficiently produce milk on brushy/swampy land that would not sustain a cow. They also require less feed and space. Finally, goats are thought to be humankind's oldest domesticated species, dating back to 10,000 years.
