A long post, but please read if you are considering purchasing a doodle puppy, or another "designer breed". Share with a friend who is planning to purchase a doodle. I’m not trying to make anyone feel bad about a past purchase, but the more light we can shed on this topic, the better the future will look for dogs and dog owners.
A "designer breed" is a marketing term used to sell mutts a higher prices. These are all Labradoodles (a poodle mixed with a Labrador retriever) like any mutt, they are all so different in size, body structure, and the type of coat they have. Please please never buy a mixed dog at full Price. Mutts should not be intentionally breed for profit. If you get a rehome from an individual, the rehome fee should be close to what your local shelter charges. Many back-yard breeders and puppy mills will advertise individual puppies as a rehome but still ask $500-$15,000.
Rescue a "designer Breed" Doodles constantly end up in shelters and rescues for reasons other than behavior.
1. Many puppy buyers were told lies by the breeder saying that doodles were low maintenance and cheep to groom.
2. Many doodle grow much bigger than expected and the buyer could not handle a large dog.
3. It is a myth that doodles are hypoallergenic and don't shed. When you mix a shedding breed with a non shedding breed it is a 50/50 chance that you will get a shedding doodle. Sometimes the undercoat does not grow in till the second year at which point they often get surrendered.
4.Many doodles have life long health problems due to genetic complications that come with mixing different breeds.
5. Many buyers see them as fluffy, little, snuggle puppies and forget that they are very intelligent often high energy dogs that need clear structure, training, exercise and mental stimulation.
6. Rare but I've even heard of them being surrender because there coats did not turn out curly/wavy/straight enough when they grew up.
If you are after particular features, rescue and adult doodle. Their look usually changes completely from a puppy to a year old. Rescues have puppies too. I will link J.A.R. They rescue puppies constantly from inhumane puppy mills that are making big bucks off mutt puppy buyers at the expense of the mother dogs.
If you are looking to purchase a pure bred puppy, only buy from a high quality AKC breeders who health tests their puppies and puts the life and comfort of the mother dog before everything else.
I love all of these dogs but I wish their breeder had considered their health over money. Read the description on each photo to see how completely different each of these labradoodles are. There is not grantee what features a doodle will have.
