Remember that cute roan mare that didn’t even get a chance to hit our page for an official ad because she sold before I could even write one?

Well here she is, Miss Betty is enjoying her summer home in Idaho! Taking in the cool mountain breeze and tall grasses and rolling miles of trails with her owner Kris. This was such a solid pair from their first ride together, and I’m so thankful (and jealous) they get to enjoy the endless trails together both in the AZ Winters & ID summers! Thank you Kris for trusting RDPH to find your perfect equine partner.

Leaving a young horse tied is a crucial training exercise that develops patience, safety, and emotional control, preventing issues like anxiety, barn sourness, and dangerous behaviors. This practice teaches horses to stand still, reduces restlessness, and builds confidence in being alone, with consistent training fostering a calm, dependable partner for handling, grooming, and farrier work.

Key Reasons for Tying Young Horses:

Developing Patience: Horses naturally meander; tying teaches them to stand still and wait, which is essential for every day work.

Safety and Ground Manners: A horse that stands quietly is safer to work around. It teaches them to respect personal space and not to pull back under pressure.

Self-Soothing and Confidence: It teaches the horse to manage anxiety on their own , rather than relying on other horses or panicking.

Mental Processing Time: Tying a horse after a training session gives them time to think about and "absorb" what they've learned

Reducing "Barn Sour" Behavior: Regularly being tied in different locations helps curb herd-bound or barn-sour tendencies.

Slowing down and enjoying the little things while still making progress🤍

This 2yo mare is quickly becoming one of the best I’ve came across. In just 2 short weeks she’s learned how to lunge, get saddled, and ponied both in the arena, next to traffic and out in the desert. She hasn’t blinked an eye or had an outburst of any kind. I’m very impressed with her mind; the way of going about things calmly and thinking before reacting. She is going to make a good one! Thanks Stacey for trusting us with another young horse from your breeding program.

Honey-Bee🐝🤍 This stunning yearling filly may look familiar to some of you , she was in our weanling kickstart program a few months ago!

Her owners decided to take advantage of our ‘limited time’ off-site training sessions we have available; to ensure this future superstar doesn’t fall behind and is being handled and keeping to her manners while being at home!

Over the next few sessions Bee will get a refresher course on tying, grooming/bathing, picking up feet & standing quietly for the farrier, the basics of free lunging, hauling/trailering, and even ponying! All things we’ve covered in our previous kickstarter program but want to make sure are still easily understood and accomplished.

I absolutely love offering refresher courses to horses that have come thru the program prior, let us be your first and only call when you need a helping hand!

Back to the Basics!

Building a solid foundation with a horse from the ground is about developing communication, trust, and respect, rather than just forcing compliance. Groundwork is considered the most crucial element in training, acting as a prerequisite for safety and performance under saddle. It creates a "thinking" horse that understands how to yield to pressure mentally and emotionally, not just physically.

By focusing on these areas, you ensure that the horse has a "thinking" brain rather than a "reacting" one, leading to a safer, more responsive partnership under saddle!
