Collection is more than just a headset
This is something I see misunderstood quite a bit, and it’s such an important concept for both horses and riders.
A horse carrying its head in a “pretty” position doesn’t necessarily mean it’s truly collected. While the frame can look correct from the front, real collection is about what’s happening through the entire body.
True collection starts from behind
•The hind legs step further underneath the body
•The back lifts and supports the rider
•The horse begins to carry more weight on the hind end
•The front end softens as a result
When a horse is genuinely collected, it feels balanced, light, and adjustable. You’re not holding the horse together, the horse is learning to carry itself.
The head and neck are simply the result of correct movement, not the starting point.
Focusing on building that strength and balance from back to front creates a horse that not only looks nice, but feels better to ride.
