🚨 Emergency vs. Non-Emergency Calls: Know the Difference! 🐴📞

When your horse is acting “off,” it’s not always easy to know how urgent the situation is. Here’s a quick guide to help you decide when to call your vet ASAP—and when it’s safe to wait for regular hours.

🔴 Emergency—Call Immediately:
• Colic signs (rolling, pawing, not eating, sweating)
• Non-weight bearing lameness
• Profuse bleeding or deep wounds
• Eye injuries or swelling
• Choke (difficulty swallowing, coughing, nasal discharge)
• Difficulty foaling or signs of dystocia
• Sudden collapse or severe behavior changes

🟡 Non-Emergency—Call During Business Hours:
• Mild lameness
• Minor cuts or swelling
• Coughing without distress
• Low-grade fever
• Skin issues or hair loss
• General wellness questions

📞 When in doubt, call! We’d rather help you sort it out early than risk waiting too long. You know your horse best—trust your gut and let us support you.

🧵 Laminitis & Dehydration in Horses: What You Need to Know 🐴💧🔥

Summer heat can do more than make your horse sweaty—it can contribute to laminitis, a painful and potentially life-threatening hoof condition. Here’s how dehydration and heat stress tie in:

🔹 Dehydration affects blood flow, thickens the blood, and disrupts circulation to the hoof—this sets the stage for laminitis.

🔹 Electrolyte imbalances from sweating heavily can lead to systemic inflammation and stress, increasing the risk.

🔹 Horses with metabolic issues (like EMS or PPID) are especially vulnerable in hot weather.

🔹 Poor hydration can also cause digestive upset, leading to hindgut acidosis—another laminitis trigger.

👉 Prevention Tips:
✅ Always provide clean, cool water
✅ Offer electrolytes during hot weather or heavy work
✅ Use shade, fans, or turnout timing to reduce heat stress
✅ Monitor for early signs: heat in hooves, shifting weight, reluctance to move

Laminitis is a medical emergency. Don’t wait—call your vet at the first signs. Let’s keep our horses cool, hydrated, and sound this summer! 💙🌡️

🔸𝐅𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐨𝐫 𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐬𝐞🔸

Feeding a senior horse (15+) may seem complicated, but it actually doesn’t have to be. Most senior horses do just fine on normal diets - but some do need to have their nutrition adjusted based on individual health and body condition.

Are you noticing that your senior horse is underweight or showing some signs of malnutrition even though you don’t think his or her diet is lacking?

Give our office a call and schedule an appointment to see how we can best help your senior horse whether it be diet or any other additional support. Schedule an appointment here: 480-621-9293 📞

🔸 𝐃𝐢𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰?

Excessive weight can cause many health issues for your horse, including but not limited to: increased risk for joint issues and degenerative bone diseases (including arthritis).

Is your horse carrying some extra pounds? Give our clinic a call, so we can come out and assess them for the best path forward regarding exercise and nutrition to make sure they get on the right track!

🔸 𝐅𝐨𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐬 𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞!

Here are some important things to stay on top of from our friends at to ensure that your foal grows into a sound and healthy horse.

🐴 Work with your veterinarian to make sure you stay on top of regular deworming, vaccinations, and other exams to make sure your foal is getting the care they need as they grow

🐴 Make sure they get a balanced diet - Once the foal’s diet shifts from milk to solid foods, a balanced dietary approach supporting no more than a moderate growth rate is less likely to cause developmental problems. It’s also essential the ration be properly balanced for vitamins and minerals.

🐴 Daily exercise - The less time foals are confined to stalls, the better! Avoid confining foals for more than 10 hours per day. Beware of excessive forced exercise, as it can strain joints and limbs, and never exercise a foal to the point of fatigue.

🐴 Trim their hooves regularly - Keep your youngster’s feet properly trimmed to foster proper bone development.

For questions about your foal or to schedule an appointment, contact us at 480-621-9293
