It is with immense sadness and grieving hearts that we have to announce that And-Hof Animals, Sanctuary for Farm Animals has closed its gates forever.

After 15 years of saving, nurturing and caring for countless animals in need, the sanctuary is insolvent and foreclosure procedures have begun. It is of great comfort to us that all of our animals have found new and safe homes, where they will continue to receive the love and care they deserve.

As we say our Goodbyes to all the souls we love so much, and to the forest grounds — our home for decades — we also want to express our gratitude for your interest and support of the And-Hof animal family.

We love our And-Hof Animals and that includes having fun with them — personally and on social media! — but often, they come to us from very un-fun situations. It's important to talk about them and promote understanding of what they go through, and why we do what we do here at the Sanctuary.

*WARNING: GRAPHIC INFORMATION AHEAD*

These are so-called Broiler Chickens, or rather Chicks. Broilers are being raised for their meat, and they grow and put on weight very fast; after 42 days, they get slaughtered.

Their lives are absolute horror from beginning to end. An overwhelming ammonia stench causes severe upper respiratory burns as the large industrial buildings they're raised in have no daylight or cleanliness. They are fed antibiotics from Day 1 to prevent against infections and bird flu, and many of them die — mostly suffocating or heart attacks.

For slaughtering they are put on a conveyor belt, a knife drops down to cut off their heads and then they fall into boiling water for de-feathering. In about 40% of cases the knife misses the head, and the Chicken falls into the boiling water alive!

To consider how regular this is: Americans alone consume 8 B-I-L-L-I-O-N Chickens every year.

As we mark today's special occasion, it includes the gift of motherly love right here at our Sanctuary 💗

Dorothee the Donkey is Mom to Mirko and Nutmeg, and they came to And-Hof together after their owner passed away.

Greta the Goat, unbeknownst to us at the time, was pregnant upon arrival. Just after 5am on March 10, 2022, in the midst of a brutal snowstorm, Ella was born in our founder Kurt's kitchen! As Greta's other Kids were taken away from her, she and Ella are very close. (Mom is a bit camera shy 😉)

Today is both National Animal Advocacy Day and National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day. The mission of our Sanctuary is to provide a place where farm animals are friends, not food — where they, along with Dogs, Cats and other typical household pets can live a safe, happy and harmonious life as naturally as possible.

If you plan to get a pet, we encourage you to visit your local shelters — they and the animals they house need you the most.

Today is Pet Owners Independence Day and YES, the humans of And-Hof also decided to turn the tables and put OUR feet up! Of 300+ animal friends here at the Sanctuary, the Goats are truly MVPs — and even some chickens! (On the contrary, Balooh the Cat is not lifting a paw of course 🙄) 🙃

We love all of our Cats of course, but what about our other furry, feathered and otherwise friends???
