Our horse farm was named after Charlie Bean, our first family horse. He passed a few years ago, but he was a beautiful, graceful, gentle giant thoroughbred that loved people, and loved to be riden. We will always miss you Charlie Bean. So I painted his photo in remembrance of our great horse.

Charlie Horse Farm is not taking in new borders at this time. All stalls are taken. Will post again if we take in new borders.

Our horses are tucked in their stalls. Freezing rain in Catlett on top of the snow makes for a slice and muddy field. Hope others have their horses under cover as well. Weather is supposed to let up and get warm this week; sure hope so. The horses (and the humans) are tired of the muck.

Charlie Horse Farm has not posted in over 2 years.... All that means is that things are still the same. Hay and grain to buy, horses to feed, stalls to clean..... the farm is still here and we have a few stalls if anyone needs to board with us.

We have one (1) stall open for boarding. Not taking on any more than that at this time, no stallions.

Delicious – well, it’s delicious for your horse at least. Hay - here is what I look for in a bale of hay; something with a lot of green that smells fresh and has a good ratio of short stems and lots of leaf/grass. For my particular horses, I like a mix of timothy, with a wee bit of alfalfa, and I know my horses love orchard grass. The bales we purchased yesterday were 55-60 pounds heavy, thick, green, sweet smelling and 2nd cut. Yum!

It’s already November… besides it being the (Year and) month to vote… it is once again time for de-worming of your horses. Remember; de-worm 6 times a year, every other month. For November, we usually select a worming product with an Ivermectin compound such as Quest Plus Gel or Equimax Paste. You can pick these up at your local Southern States or Tractor Supply Store for less than $10 per horse.

A plead to all of our horse friends - get their fall shots. W. Nile virus is ramped; your horses are in danger of contacting this disease. The shots are available through your local horse vet and if you are capable of administering your own, you can buy them at Tractor Supply.

Okay horse enthusiasts – September is de-worming time. The product you want to use contains Benzimidazole and you can find it in brands such as Panacur paste or Safe-Guard paste. De-wormers can be purchased at Southern States or Tractor Supply Stores and cost $6 to $15 depending on the compound & brand. If your horse is difficult to de-worm, carve chunks out of an apple and insert wormer in the apple and feed in quarters. Another trick is to add the paste to applesauce and mix it with their grain. Charlie Horse Farm will send a reminder in November for the last round of de-worming for the year.

Also, Charlie Horse Farm recently took on an older horse and the owners were concerned that he was thin. While wanting to put some weight on the horse, using a weight builder can help, we added a higher fat grain to his diet. The caution here is that older horses can be arthritic, and we have to ensure we don’t add too much weight which would be bad for his bones and he could founder. So our advice is before you fatten up a horse – think twice about consequences of adding extra weight.

July means de-worming time again at the Charlie Horse Farm. Horses in Virginia get roundworms, bots, tapeworms, pinworks and bloodworms. In July we select a pyrantel compound, found in brands such as Primex, or Strongid. De-wormers can be purchased at Southern States or Tractor Supply Stores and cost $6 to $15 depending on the compound & brand. If your horse is difficult to de-worm, carve chunks out of an apple and insert wormer in the apple and feed in quarters. Charlie Horse Farm will send a reminder in September for the next round of de-worming. Also, remember to keep lots of cool water available during the hot summer days. Tractor Supply also sells very easy to install automatic waterers for your tanks. Screw them to the side of the tank, twist your hose on, turn the water on, leave it be and the water trough keeps full all the time.
