Assistant Riding Instructor/Trainer Wanted!

Scattered Acres Sport Horses is looking for a high-quality individual to join our team as a part-time Assistant Instructor and Trainer.
Scattered Acres is a coaching and training facility that focuses on high-level horsemanship, training and riding. Our primary client base either own or lease their horse(s) and ride from a Beginner Novice through Preliminary Level in Eventing, Training through 4th level Dressage, and through the 1.15m jumpers.
Some clients do not own horses and have come to us to refine or begin their riding skills in a professional atmosphere that uses a combination of lunge lessons and working with our small group of schoolmasters in a balanced seat style to gain top-notch skills while safely working on their equitation and proper use of aids.
The horses in our program are primarily in training to become more skilled at levels greater than BN eventing or Training Level dressage and require a rider/trainer who is skilled at advancing horses through the levels.
The applicant should possess experience and training in educating people about horses and riding and be interested in teaching from beginning through intermediate level students. Please look at our website for more information on our programs at scatteredacres.net and contact us through the email there if the position looks like a good fit for you.

ISO Equestrian Fellowship/Working Student!

The Scattered Acres Fellowship is an experiential learning program focused on riding instruction and comprehensive professional development in the equine industry. We prefer our applicants have at least two years of riding and horse care experience and commit to a one-year fellowship but will consider shorter durations as well.

Our curriculum and focus is calibrated for each individual depending on their experience, the duration of their commitment and their goals. All working students are instructed in the fundamentals of equine care, barn management, riding instruction, horse training, competition grooming and equestrian business management.

Intensive daily riding lessons from the founder and owner of Scattered Acres, Autumn Rae, will focus on elevating our fellows to be competent and competitive equestrians in dressage, stadium and cross country jumping.

We are located in the geographic heart of eventing, dressage and hunter jumper country so there will be ample opportunities to attend and perhaps compete in local USEA, USDF, USHJA, competitions. Additional educational activities will include reading assignments, various clinics and working with our on-site non-profit HEAL which is an equine assisted learning and psychotherapy organization working to assist veterans and first responders.

There is no shortage of opportunities to learn and advance here at Scattered Acres. Fellows are immediately immersed in the responsibilities of operating a busy riding stable and contribute to the efforts of our professional team. Our fellows benefit tremendously from this intensive practical experience and leave prepared for many possibilities in the equine industry.

Happy Working Student Wednesday!
Each week this summer we'll be checking in with our working students and what they are up to. Follow along for updates on training, rider progress, and much more as our young equestrians learn the ins and outs of eventing!

This week I learned how to clip a bridle path. It is simply a short section of clipped mane, directly behind the horse’s ears. This practice is common across many disciplines. The purpose of this grooming method is to create an even surface for the halter or bridle to sit on. It allows tack to fit properly and sit evenly, preventing the addition of unnecessary poll pressure. Clipping a bridle path also prevents the mane from getting tangled up in the halter or bridle.

I also was taught how to bang a tail. In this aspect of grooming, one makes a horizontal cut across the base of a horse’s tail. It creates a clean line which gives the tail a neat and full appearance. This is a common practice in English disciplines such as eventing or dressage. Trimming in this way removes the dead ends of the hair, preventing them from breaking. This promotes the growth of a healthy tail. When tail banging, I learned that it is important to condition and thoroughly brush the horse’s tail out. All of the hairs need to be at their natural length so that the cut is even. I also learned that it is necessary to consider how the horse carries his tail when moving. This determines how much needs to be cut. The length of tail banging is based on personal preference.
