1. Will the shelter allow me to foster? Unless you are an approved foster who has completed the county's foster training class, the answer is sadly no.
2. Does the shelter require I come into the shelte

r to adopt? Yes, although due to Covid the shelter is currently closed and adoptions or “meet and greets” are by appointment only. If you are out of state and can find a 501(c)3 rescue who is an adoption partner of the Los Angeles County shelter system (DACC) they will be able to pull the pet for you.
3. Does the Castaic Shelter ship animals? No, the shelter doesn’t have the budget or manpower to ship animals.
4. Is the Castaic Shelter a "no kill" shelter? The shelter is far from a "no kill" shelter. The staff does not want to euthanize any animals - but unfortunately the shelter's intakes far exceed the adoptions. Castaic Shelter is not a rescue so please be aware that if you surrender an animal it may not get adopted.
5. Can you help and if so how? If you are local you can sign up for the volunteer training program, but volunteer training is currently on hold due to Covid. You can always help us by networking and sharing our animals. If you wish to donate to our charitable arm, the "Dreams Come True" charity which provides outside medical help to pets at the Castaic Animal Care Center, you can do so by sending a tax deductible check to the shelter. No donation is too small! This page promotes the adoption and rescue of pets from the Castaic Shelter. All dogs and cats who are included in this album are at the Castaic Shelter and urgently in need of adoption or rescue.

Why yes! Buster is handsome! He is a 6 year old, 49 lb Alaskan Husky/Lab male. . Previous owner wrote on pet profile: housebroken (that’s a plus), not destructive and doesn’t try to escape. Very loving-rolls over for belly rubs when he’s comfortable with you. Enjoys 20 minute walks. Walks politely on leash. Has been mostly an indoor dog. Shelter is recommending calm dogs. A home with no cats is required. If Buster sounds like a good match for your family you can meet him at SCV/Castaic Shelter.

Meet Flower 🌸—a stunning 1-year-and-10-month-old Belgian Malinois with a heart as big as her playful spirit. At a compact 47 pounds, this sweet girl is the perfect mix of smart, active, and affectionate. She’s super social with other dogs and loves making new furry friends wherever she goes.

Heartbreaking! 💔 When pets are left at the shelter and lose everything they have ever known. Puppy and Roxy were lucky, they were surrendered together. At least they have each other. They are afraid. We love you girls. We can’t wait until you feel our love!

RESCUE ONLY! Say What? How can this 7 pound, 3 year old girl be Rescue Only? She doesn’t like the leash and she doesn’t like men. But ChiChi had a great Girl’s Day Out with staff and volunteers! Is there an Adoption Partner who can rescue ChiChi and teach her that leashes and men aren’t so bad?

Tall, Dark, and Handsome Rottweiler! Hey Rottweiler Lovers! Apollo is a must meet! He is lovable, playful and stunning. Apollo is dog friendly with a gentle/dainty play style. If you love Rottweilers, Apollo is a must meet! If you don’t love Rottweilers, you haven’t yet met Apollo! Apollo, , is listed as a 3 year old, 70 pound Rottweiler. He arrived as a stray and his human didn’t claim him. Their loss is your gain! Apollo is such a great pup, he was transferred to Castaic from our sister shelter to help him find his forever home. Is that yours? He’s only here for a little while! Do something that makes you smile!

Two TINY chihuahuas! Both need rescues to save them!!! URGENT 🚨

Behavior notes:
She is not leash trained. She snaps and bites at the leash. She will alligator roll and fail on the leash. The handler spent a few minutes building trust with her. The handler slowly picked her up and carried her to the play yard. She was given a moment to acclimate to her surroundings. When the handler called to her, she did not approach. She created space away from the handler. The handler slowly reached for the back of her harness, and she turned and tried to bite the handler’s hand. The handler slowly picked her up and allowed the handler to do a handling assessment while holding her. She allowed the handler to check her ears and teeth with no reaction. When the handler tucked her tail, she tucked it away. When the handler touched her front and back paws, she pulled her feet away. The handler carried her back to her kennel. She needs someone who will go slow with her and build her confidence. Due to her handling sesnitivites and her willingness to bite.

Behavior notes: I entered the kennel and he was standing in one spot. I entered the kennel, knelt, and began coaxing him. He did not approach and remained in the same spot. I attempted to pet him on the head and he snapped. He repeated the same behavior when trying to pet him on the back. I attempted to loop leash him, and he continued to try to bite. I was able to pick him up with a towel and hold him without issue. I held him for a few minutes to see if he would settle. He remained calm while I held him in the towel. I attempted to pet him, and he snapped before my hand could even reach within a foot of him. I also touched his front paws while holding him and he again attempted to bite. He will not allow touch or interaction without trying to bite and without picking him up using a towel. Due to his handling sensitivities and willingness to bite when being touched.

Some dogs wait simply because no one has noticed them yet 💔

Meet Gladys , a 5-year-old pittie who has somehow found herself overlooked despite having SO much going for her.

Gladys is friendly, good on leash, takes treats gently, and already knows sit, stay, and come. And her playgroup notes give us even more to love ❤️

She entered the yard with soft body language, exchanged gentle greetings with the other dogs, offered a play bow, and happily joined in some gentle, dainty play. She remained social throughout her time in the yard and frequently approached the handlers to seek affection.

Basically? Gladys is a sweet, affectionate girl who seems to have missed the memo that she’s supposed to make it difficult for us to sell her 🥹

She’s 5 years old, already spayed, social with other large dogs, and ready for someone to finally notice just how special she is.

Maybe that person is you. And if it isn’t, please help us find them by liking, commenting, and sharing Gladys. Every share gives this overlooked girl another chance to be seen 🫶🏻
