This may be an unpopular opinion to some, but here we go!
This is “Sashay”. 6 month old Pullet who just started to lay.
Out of absolutely no where Sashay lost movement in BOTH legs. Naturally I freaked out thinking it was some sort of disease. After a few days she was not improving so I decided to bring her to my veterinarian, or the “Bird Doc” to be checked out. I had full intention of having her euthanized, but I did want her checked out to be sure it wasn’t contagious or something that can make other birds sick.
I needed to do this for my own mental state of being.
No diseases, nothing wonky, BUT, she had Major back trauma. As she possibly could of hatched with Less than perfect back structure, the veternarian things she was hurt by a young immature cockeral. I did end up surrendering her to my veterinarian as I would never be able to properly care for a bird going through this. There is a chance she will walk again, however, just in case it is genetic I don’t want to have potential issues in the future with new babies.
These pictures were videos sent to me by my awesome bird vet, Dr. Wolfe. Sashay is in the best care and improving every day. She does have a family already lined up for her where she will be able to spend her life living free with no boys.
So say a prayer for Sashay she continues to get better. AND yes, if the veternarian ever thinks her quality life just isnt there other decisions will be made. But for now she feels like shes very happy and content.
Freak accidents happen. They absolutely suck. It’s all part of raising animals. But at the end of the day I always feel like I do everything in my power to put my birds first. I’m super thankful to have a Bird Doctor who treats them as her own and willing to take her in her own home to try and fix her up.
PS some may call me crazy, but tell me something I don’t already know. 😜
