Important Health Update for Our Rescue Cats
We are committed to the health and safety of every cat in our care—and to the families who welcome them home. That’s why we are now testing every single cat for:
🐾 Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV):
This virus is one of the leading causes of illness and death in cats. It spreads through close contact such as grooming, sharing food bowls, or bites. FeLV weakens the immune system, meaning cats are more likely to get sick from infections or even cancer. Cats with FeLV can live happy lives, but they need special care and a safe environment.
🐾 Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV):
Often compared to HIV in humans, FIV affects a cat’s ability to fight off illness. It spreads mostly through bite wounds, so it’s more common in unneutered outdoor males who fight. Cats with FIV can live for many years without problems, but they may need extra care if they do get sick because their immune system is weaker than normal.
🐾 Feline Panleukopenia Virus (FPV):
Sometimes called “feline distemper,” this is a highly contagious and often deadly virus, especially for kittens. It attacks the bone marrow and intestines, causing fever, vomiting, diarrhea, and dehydration. FPV spreads easily through shared litter boxes, bedding, or even on people’s shoes and clothing. Vaccination is the best defense, but testing helps us catch it before it spreads.
Why this matters:
By testing for these diseases, we can identify problems early, protect other cats in our care, and give adopters peace of mind knowing their new companion has been thoroughly screened.
Recently, claims were made about a sick cat being adopted from us. After careful review, we could not verify that the person making these claims had actually adopted from our rescue. Even so, we take these concerns very seriously. We hate the thought of there ever being issues with our cats, which is why we are taking this additional step to ensure transparency and health.
We know this testing puts a strain on our budget, but our priority is to guarantee the health of the wonderful cats we adopt to the public. Every adoption should bring joy, not worry—and we are committed to making that a reality. If you previously adopted a cat from us and would like it tested, please reach out!
Thank you for your continued support as we work to protect both our cats and the families who love them. 💙
