This nestling Cooper’s Hawk fell from his nest and was found grounded next to his deceased sibling by construction workers. He’s now safe with us, but this is sadly only one of countless baby birds this will happen to this holiday weekend.

We ask that if you love birds, opt for quieter festivities this . Our human holiday falls in the middle of nesting season, and our neighborhoods are filled with wildlife we don’t see. While we’re busy preparing our backyards for parties, animals are busy trying to protect and raise their young in the trees, shrubs, and bushes.

Both birds and mammals become terrified at night when explosions go off and their homes are filled with loud noises and bright, flashing lights. Parents will spook and fly in the dark, crashing into windows or cars, leaving their babies alone. The babies then panic and jump out of their nest, injuring themselves in the process. If the parents died when the fireworks scared them off, the babies will slowly starve before dying themselves.

Please be mindful that fireworks terrify all animals, including pets and livestock. More animals become injured, misplaced, or orphaned this night than any other of the year, and the days after are some of the most overwhelming for rescues (nonetheless, we’re open and here to help). Independence Day is important to us as humans, but animals do not celebrate holidays and they too deserve to live here freely and safely.

Pet Safety Alert: Fireworks Can Cause Panic, Injury, or Escape– Let’s Keep Them Safe, Chatham County! 🐾🎇

While many of us enjoy the fireworks and festivities of Independence Day, our pets often don’t. The loud booms and flashes can be terrifying, causing even the calmest pets to panic and run away — leading to a massive increase in lost and injured animals every year. 💔

The days surrounding the 4th of July see the highest number of stray dog intakes across the country.

Let’s work together to prevent that. Here’s how you can protect your furry family this holiday:

✅ Keep pets indoors during fireworks — no exceptions, even if they usually enjoy being outside.
✅ Double-check ID tags and microchip info to make sure it’s current.
✅ Start early — expect fireworks a few days before and after the 4th.
✅ Secure pets in a quiet room if you’re hosting guests. Let visitors know not to open that door.
✅ Talk to your vet about calming aids like Thundershirts, anxiety meds, or supplements.
✅ Play background noise (TV, radio, or calming music) to help mask the fireworks.
✅ Distract with a favorite treat or toy — peanut butter Kongs and puzzle feeders are great options!

Let’s keep Chatham County pets safe and sound this 4th of July. Please share these tips with friends and neighbors.

Together, we can prevent unnecessary heartbreak and protect the animals we love. 🐶❤️

You may have seen our recent post about not straddling turtles with your car (ie driving over them with your wheels on either side).

This is a common injury that can happen, particularly to snapping turtles. Then they are straddled they raise up on their legs to defend themselves, causing their shell to be scraped by the undercarrage. They also often snap and will have jaw injuries from trying to scare away a vehicle!

We understand that in some situations this is the only options. Of course keep yourself safe when driving and don’t hit the turtle with your tires. We share this information so when possible you now know this is not a safe way to avoid a turtle on the road.

📸 thank you to Ryan for sharing this and other photos with us.
