The Wake County Animal Center is nearing maximum capacity and in about the last seven days, the center has taken in 90 dogs. That brings their total number of dogs waiting for homes to 135 as of Sunday, March 5. There are around another 20 dogs with foster families also waiting for adoption.
On top of that, appointments to surrender pets are fully booked through mid-April. That means 130 more dogs will be entering the shelter over the next six weeks. Want to help?
Adoption fees are $95 for dogs, $45 for cats under five years old, and $15 for cats that are greater than five years old. However, any dog or cat that’s been at the shelter for more than two weeks is available for just $25 for dogs and “name your price” for cats.

We have over 90 dogs on our adoption floor, and we are quickly running out of kennel space. Our owner-surrender appointments are booked out until mid-April and, by our calculation, we have another 130+ dogs coming in over the next six weeks.
Thanks to our community stepping up to help in the past, we have not had to euthanize to make space on our adoption floor in the last seven years. We need your help to keep it that way!

If you’re looking for a great dog, come visit us! We’re open every day from 12pm-6pm, except major holidays. Our staff and volunteer matchmakers would love to help you find your next family member.

2. Foster!
We have dozens of local 501c3 animal rescue partners, but they can’t help us unless they have foster homes. Sign up to be a foster and insist they transfer an animal from the Wake County Animal Center into their care. Fostering is a great way to help save lives, from the comfort of your own home.
3. Share on social media!
We have some fantastic dogs who are deserving of loving homes, we have others who have strayed from their homes and need to be reunited with their owner - share them far and wide!
4. If you know someone whose pet is missing, check the Wake County Animal Center! We love reuniting lost pets with their families, but we can’t make that happen if their owner doesn’t know where to look. Any pet with a “I’m not yet available” flag on their profile came in as a stray within the last 3-5 days. Help us reunite them with their family.
5. If you find a stray/lost dog, please try to find the owner yourself - post online, ask friends for help, have a veterinarian scan for a microchip. Even just a couple of days can make all the difference. Plus, you get to be a part of that magical reunion!
6. If you must rehome your dog, please do it yourself - post online, ask friends and family for help, return your dog to where you adopted from, reach out to area rescues, etc. Remember, we are taking owner-surrenders by appointment only and are booked out for weeks. Please plan accordingly if you must rehome your dog.
Our staff, volunteers, fosters, and 501c3 transfer partners can only do so much without community support. Our dogs are counting on you to help them find new homes before we reach capacity. Please help!
