Come Cheer on Our Local K9 Heroes!

Mark your calendars for the Carson City K9 Challenge on Saturday, October 3, 2026, at Fuji Park!

This family-friendly event is an awesome opportunity to watch talented law-enforcement K9 teams put their training to the test through detection work, patrol scenarios, agility and obstacle courses, and demonstrations showcasing the incredible skills these dogs and
their handlers use in the field.

This event is especially close to our hearts at Sierra Veterinary Hospital because we're fortunate to donate veterinary care to many of the working K9s protecting our surrounding communities, including:
• Carson City K9 Unit
• Lyon County K9 Unit
• Yerington K9 Unit
• Nevada State Police K9 Unit
• BLM K9 Unit
• Tahoe Douglas Fire K9 Unit

So don't ask the SVH team to pick a favorite, we have way too many good boys and girls competing! We'll be proudly rooting for all of our four-legged patients and their handlers. SVH will also have a booth at the event! Stop by and meet some of our team, learn a little something about veterinary care, and try your hand at a fun interactive game with a chance to win a prize! We would love the opportunity to meet more members of our community outside the hospital.

Keep a Pet Emergency Kit Ready With:

• At least 3–7 days of food and water
• Daily medications, with extra medication when possible
• Copies of vaccination records and important medical information
• Current identification tags and updated microchip information
• Leashes, harnesses, and appropriately sized carriers
• Collapsible food and water bowls
• Waste bags and/or cat litter and a litter pan
• Blankets and towels
• A pet first-aid kit
• Recent photos of each pet in case you become separated
• Emergency contact information, including your veterinarian
• Flashlight and extra batteries
• Familiar toys or comfort items

Have a Plan Before an Emergency Happens:
Keep carriers, leashes, medications, records, and emergency supplies somewhere you can access quickly. Identify pet-friendly hotels, boarding facilities, or friends and family outside your immediate area who could accommodate your pets if evacuation becomes necessary.

Sierra Veterinary Hospital also offers boarding for pets during emergency and evacuation situations. If you need to get your family to safety and need a secure place for your pets, please reach out to us. Availability may depend on the circumstances and hospital capacity, but we will do everything we reasonably can to help our community and its pets during an emergency.

Most importantly, if you are told to evacuate, take your pets with you. If conditions aren't safe for you, they aren't safe for them either. A little preparation now can make a huge difference when minutes matter. Sierra Veterinary Hospital is happy to help ensure your pet's vaccinations, medications, microchip information, and medical records are ready should you ever need them.

We’re Proud to Be AAHA Re-Accredited!

Sierra Veterinary Hospital is proud to celebrate our recent AAHA re-accreditation, and we didn’t simply pass, we passed with flying colors!

The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) is the only organization that independently accredits veterinary hospitals in the United States, and fewer than 15% of veterinary hospitals nationwide achieve this distinction.

AAHA-accredited hospitals are evaluated against more than 900 rigorous standards covering nearly every aspect of veterinary medicine, including patient care, medical protocols, facility cleanliness, safety, record keeping, and team training. During our recent evaluation, SVH achieved near-perfect scores in multiple categories, something we are incredibly proud of and a reflection of the work our team puts in every single day.

AAHA accreditation isn't simply a title on our wall. It represents our commitment to holding ourselves to a higher standard, continually improving, and providing our patients and clients with consistent, high-quality veterinary care. We couldn't be prouder of our entire SVH team for this accomplishment, and we are grateful to our clients and community for continuing to trust us with the care of their pets.

Bad breath isn't just bad breath

Here's what your pet's mouth might be trying to tell you:
• Persistent bad breath (not just "dog breath")
• Yellow or brown buildup on the teeth
• Red, swollen, or bleeding gums
• Dropping food or chewing on one side
• Pawing at the mouth or face

Dental disease is one of the most common health issues we see in pets, and one of the most overlooked. Left untreated, it can affect more than just the mouth, it can impact the heart, liver, and kidneys too.

Most pets hide it well, so if any of this sounds familiar, it might be worth a mention next time you're in.

Could Your Pet Be in Pain? Know the Signs!

Our pets can't tell us when something hurts, and both dogs and cats can be surprisingly good at hiding discomfort. Knowing what to watch for can help you recognize pain earlier.

Common Signs of Pain in Dogs
• Limping, stiffness, or difficulty getting up
• Reluctance to jump, climb stairs, or exercise
• Panting or trembling without an obvious reason
• Restlessness or difficulty getting comfortable
• Excessive licking of a specific area
• Changes in appetite or sleep
• Becoming unusually withdrawn, clingy, or irritable

Common Signs of Pain in Cats
• Hiding or avoiding interaction
• Decreased grooming or overgrooming one area
• Reluctance to jump or using lower surfaces
• Moving slowly, stiffness, or a hunched posture
• Squinting or changes in facial expression
• Changes in appetite or litter box habits
• Increased irritability or sensitivity to touch
• Sleeping more or becoming less active

Behavior changes can be one of the earliest signs that something isn't right. If your pet just doesn't seem like themselves, it's worth paying attention.
The good news is that pain management isn't one-size-fits-all. At Sierra Veterinary
Hospital, we have multiple options that can be used individually or together, including pain medications, joint supplements, acupuncture, water treadmill therapy, and laser therapy.

Hello friends! Dr. Cowboy here! 🤠 I’m a favorite at Sierra Veterinary Hospital as they helped save my life! Now I’m looking for my forever family to call my own. 🥰 I am a neutered 7 year old Husky/ Aussie mix. I love humans (the tiny ones too) and other dogs! I am headed off to doggie bootcamp with Stand Proud Dog Training tomorrow for a couple weeks to learn some basic obedience and then I will be ready for my new home! My new family will also get some complementary at home lessons with me to help me settle in. I would love to go to a home with other puppers to play with. I love cuddles and belly rubs and all the pets. Please consider opening your heart and home to me as I promise to fill it with so much love! ❤️ Cowboy

To our valued clients;

Here at SVH, we strive to provide the best care for you and your furry kids. As such, we like to keep you guys informed of any changes we may make that would have an impact on you. Due to staff training and continuing education, the weeks of July 25th and August 1st will have some restrictions to appointments. After those two weeks we will go back to our regular hours. Below we have listed our hours for those two weeks:

July 25th – closed

July 26th (7:30am-5:30pm) – open to scheduled surgeries and technician appointments

July 27th (7:30am-5:30pm) – open to scheduled dentals and technician appointments

July 28th (7:30am-5:30pm) – open to scheduled appointments only

July 29th (7:30am-5:30pm) – open to scheduled appointments only

July 30th (8:00am-2:00pm) – open to scheduled appointments only



August 1st – closed

August 2nd (7:30am-5:30pm) – open to scheduled surgeries and technician appointments

August 3rd (7:30am-5:30pm) – open to scheduled dentals and technician appointments

August 4th (7:30am-5:30pm) – open to scheduled appointments only

August 5th (7:30am-5:30pm) – open to scheduled appointments only

For boarding, we ask that you drop off and pick up your pets between 8:00am-4:00pm on the week days that we are open for these two weeks. For Saturday, between 8:00-2:00pm.

As always if you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to give us a call or send us an email. Thank you for your understanding and patience with us.
