Colic

Colic is not a specific disease, but a symptom of abdominal pain. It can range from mild gas discomfort to life-threatening intestinal twists. Knowing the signs can save your horse’s life.

𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲𝘀:
Gas Buildup
Impactions
Intestinal Displacement/Torsions
Parasites
Sudden Feed Changes
Dehydration
Extreme weather
Stress

𝗘𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝘀:
Pawing or rolling (most horses will shake after a roll; if they're rolling, standing and not shaking - take notice.)
Flank watching or biting
Restlessness, sweating
Frequently laying down with signs of discomfort
Repeatedly getting up/down

𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘃𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗻?
Better to error on the side of caution especially if you're seeing these signs:
Excessive rolling, repeatedly laying down, persistent pawing, elevated HR, sweating and a lack of interest in food.

𝗧𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗶𝗻 𝗛𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗲𝘀:
Banamine
Nasogastric tubing to relieve pain from gastric distention
Fluid Therapy
Lubricants & Laxatives
Surgery

This is resident horse at the ranch that had a severe colic case. Thankfully it did not involve surgical intervention. She's fully recovered and doing well.

Most likely the cause: Stress - she rolled near the fence and got herself cast.

This is our small animal rehabilitation space, equipped with therapeutic tools like cavaletti rails, balance balls, peanuts, and textured surfaces.

These tools are used to:
• Improve proprioception and neuromuscular control
• Strengthen core and limb muscles
• Encourage correct gait patterns and stride length
• Support recovery from orthopedic or neurologic injury
• Maintain mobility and function in senior pets

We work to meet your pet’s specific medical and functional needs. These targeted exercises help maintain long-term musculoskeletal health, mobility, and overall performance.

How stem cells are collected for advanced veterinary therapy with Dr. Stramel 👇

In veterinary regenerative medicine, adipose-derived stem cell therapy is a powerful tool for managing orthopedic and inflammatory conditions in small animals.

Step 1: Surgical Collection
Stem cells are harvested from a small sample of adipose (fat) tissue, typically collected from the abdominal region during a brief, sterile surgical procedure. Adipose tissue is rich in mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), which have regenerative and anti-inflammatory properties.

Step 2: Laboratory Processing
The collected fat is sent to a specialized laboratory where the MSCs are isolated, purified, and cryopreserved for long-term storage. These cells can later be thawed and administered to target areas in the body—such as joints, soft tissues, or systemically—to support healing and reduce inflammation.

Throughout the procedure, your pet is under general anesthesia with full monitoring and support, ensuring the highest level of safety and comfort.

Stay tuned for the next phase: how stem cells are reintroduced to promote healing where your pet needs it most.

𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲-𝗗𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝗰𝗹𝗲 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 & 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗪𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗜𝘁

We recommend MYOS for dogs experiencing muscle loss due to age, injury, inactivity, or recovery. It's well-supported by science and safe for long-term use.

The Active Ingredient: Fortetropin® – a patented bioactive compound made from fertilized egg yolk, processed to preserve proteins and growth factors involved in muscle development.

The Mechanism of Action: Fortetropin works by reducing myostatin, a protein that limits muscle growth. Lowering myostatin promotes muscle protein synthesis and helps preserve or increase lean muscle mass.

𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗱: A peer-reviewed randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study in geriatric dogs showed significant improvement in muscle thickness and reduced atrophy over 12 weeks (published in Vet Med Sci, 2020).

𝗠𝗬𝗢𝗦 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝗰𝗹𝗲 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗺𝘂𝗹𝗮 (𝗩𝗲𝘁 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵) 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗮 𝘃𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.

Contact our office, at 972-394-6422 to discuss muscle support options to help your dog stay stronger for longer.

Neuromodulation:
Acupuncture activates peripheral nerves in the skin, muscles, and connective tissue. These nerves send signals to the spinal cord and brain, leading to the release of neurotransmitters (like serotonin and dopamine) and endorphins, which help reduce pain and promote a sense of well-being.

Improved Blood Flow:
Needle insertion causes localized microtrauma, which increases circulation to the area. This helps bring oxygen, nutrients, and immune cells to support healing while clearing away inflammation and cellular waste.

Fascial Stimulation:
Acupuncture needles interact with fascia—the connective tissue that surrounds muscles and organs—modifying tension patterns and improving mobility, especially in musculoskeletal pain or stiffness.

Regulation of the Autonomic Nervous System:
Acupuncture helps shift the body from a sympathetic “fight or flight” mode to a parasympathetic “rest and digest” state. This is crucial for animals suffering from chronic stress, pain, GI disorders, or poor immune function.

Segmental Analgesia:
By targeting specific spinal cord segments, acupuncture can create regional blocks of pain relief—similar in concept to an epidural—without the need for pharmaceuticals.

𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐖𝐞 𝐔𝐬𝐞 𝐈𝐭:
In veterinary practice, acupuncture is commonly used to manage:

Arthritis and joint pain
Back and neck pain (disc disease, lumbosacral or SI issues)
Neurologic conditions (e.g., paralysis, seizures)
Gastrointestinal disorders (like ulcers or colic)
Respiratory problems
Performance recovery in equine athletes
Behavioral issues stemming from anxiety or discomfort

Bottom line: Acupuncture doesn’t just mask symptoms—it stimulates the body’s own healing systems. Whether we’re helping a geriatric dog with arthritis or a high-level equine athlete recover from a hard run, acupuncture offers a safe, non-pharmaceutical tool to reduce pain, restore function, and improve quality of life.
