Winter is here with snow and below freezing temperatures. Food for the wildlife is scarce and we've had a raccoon and an opossum finishing off the crabapples in the trees along the driveway. But today was our most exciting wildlife siting--a Roosevelt Elk family! They couldn't resist our beautiful pasture. (Apologies for the poor phone photo!) We usually see the large herd of over 400 elk near North Bend. Many years ago, I saw a lone bull elk on our main road, but have never seen any others. Here is an interesting article about the history of the Snoqualmie Valley elk.
