Thank you to our incredible Veterinary Technicians today and everyday for the care they provide our patients! Veterinary Technicians play a vital role in our hospitals by performing all of the nursing care for our patients. Their duties differ each day depending on our patients' needs. Some of their responsibilities include drawing blood, administering anesthesia, X-rays, physical exams and monitoring patient progress, placing catheters, blood transfusions, prepping for surgery, and communicating with pet owners. They also provide comfort and connect with our patients.

Oliver is one of our repeat offenders, finding himself in trouble for eating items not meant to be eaten. Recently, the 9-month-old puppy underwent a second surgery at our Carlsbad hospital. This time he had swallowed a wooden BBQ skewer that perforated his intestinal tract. Just a few months before, Oliver managed to ingest a sock requiring surgery for its removal.

It looks like Ruby is doing just swimmingly! Just last month, this sweet pup underwent surgery at our Murrieta hospital California Veterinary Specialists for a life-threatening uterine infection; a condition called pyometra. To prevent the infection from invading Ruby's bloodstream, Ruby underwent surgery to remove her ovaries and uterus. During the surgery, doctors discovered Ruby also had a mammary tumor that needed removal. After two days of hospital care, Ruby returned home to mend and soon had no trouble keeping up with her partner in crime, aka her sister Mossy. We LOVE happy endings!!

A long overdue CONGRATULATIONS to Dr. Benedict on her board certification - DACVIM (SAIM)! Those letters stand for: Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (Small Animal Internal Medicine). What's it take to become board certified? In addition to completing a veterinary degree - a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine (DVM), a board-certified veterinary specialist must also complete an internship, a two to four-year specialized residency, and publish a paper in a peer-reviewed journal. Specialists must also undergo a series of exams based on knowledge and skill in the given specialty. A board-certified specialist's expertise complements the care provided by a primary care veterinarian.
