Frost Arrow Farm We grow ultra-local veggies and small fruit in our own backyard and other former lawns around Carlis

World's tiniest CSA, rhubarb experts, and growers of amazing salads. We've been in business since 2013, except for a few years where we weren't. We follow USDA organic standards but aren't currently certified.

Ok, so these apricots should have been pruned earlier. But I got to hang out with the flowers and the bees on a warm March day!

We have CSA spots available for this year! If you're looking for a truly small-scale and local farm, following organic practices, to get a weekly box of produce, get in touch! I grow in my own backyard here in Carlisle and at a friend's property nearby.

I just put some lettuce and spinach seeds in yesterday and am dreaming about May days like this photo from last year...

In today's News You Can Use, I realized that not only do vice grips give you a convenient handle to hold these stakes so you don't hammer your fingers, they keep the wood from splitting. I had stuck a hose clamp on one last year when it split, but this was cheaper, easier, and faster. And the groundhog fence is up again.

These Mirlo and Aunt Mae's Bibb lettuce have been outside enjoying the sunshine for a little bit now. No, I'm not great at updating social media. Yes, these are the same lettuces we've been following all along! (I am growing other things too! 😀)

Here's what those same seedlings I posted about two weeks ago look now. Next step, carefully removing all but one lettuce from each cell. It feels harsh but it's the only way to get a good solid root ball ready for transplanting, instead of a couple wimpy little threads that just fall out of the soil.

"Imagine how different the story would be if there were still tens of thousands of chicken and pig farmers bringing their animals to hundreds of regional slaughterhouses. An outbreak at any one of them would barely disturb the system; it certainly wouldn’t be front-page news. Meat would probably be more expensive, but the redundancy would render the system more resilient, making breakdowns in the national supply chain unlikely."

Michael Pollan on the long history of choices favoring just-in-time efficiency over resiliency in our food systems.

“Only when the tide goes out,” Warren Buffett observed, “do you discover who’s been swimming naked.” For our society, the Covid-19 pandemic represents an ebb tide of historic proportions, one that is laying bare vulnerabilities and inequities that in normal times have gone undiscovered. No...

Signs of spring are all around us! I'm curious if people are actually reading this page or not as Facebook keeps telling me people look at it, but they don't show up in the stats. We're doing a couple CSA shares this year so I figured I'd post and see if anyone was watching.

What's the prognosis? Surprisingly good! I mean, I knew it would be good, because it also has bacon in it, which seemed a little bit like cheating. But it didn't have much of a bacon flavor to it; the chickpeas did most of the heavy lifting. You could definitely sub it out entirely if you needed a vegan dish.

Will definitely make again.

The carrots in the tunnel look like they'll be harvestable, as planned, by mid-june! Any excitement you may feel about that, my friends, is dwarfed by the the excitement that knee-high tomato plant you see sharing their bed will feel at getting them out of the way.
