📣 Attention Shadow Hill Stables Families
We want to make everyone aware that there are increased reports of EHV (Equine Herpesvirus) in our region. Because the health and safety of our horses is our top priority, we’re sharing this information so we can all stay proactive, informed, and cautious.
This is not a reason for alarm—it’s simply a reminder that prevention is our strongest tool.
About EHV:
EHV is a highly contagious virus that spreads through respiratory droplets, shared equipment, contaminated clothing, and even on our hands. Many horses experience only mild respiratory symptoms, but more serious cases can include fever, nasal discharge, lethargy, and in rare instances, neurological issues such as weakness or difficulty standing. Early awareness and good biosecurity significantly reduce risk.
To help safeguard our herd at Shadow Hill, please follow these proactive precautions:
• Avoid visiting other barns unless absolutely necessary.
• If you do go to another barn, change clothing and do NOT wear the same footwear when returning to Shadow Hill.
• Keep a dedicated pair of boots or shoes used only at Shadow Hill Stables.
• Wash or sanitize hands thoroughly before interacting with any horse here.
• Do not share equipment such as grooming tools, buckets, or tack with horses outside our barn.
• Limit outside horse contact including shows, clinics, hauling, or trail rides with unfamiliar barns during this time.
If your horse has been exposed to another barn or shows any signs of illness:
• Please notify us immediately.
• Quarantine protocols generally include 14–21 days of separation, temperature checks twice daily, no shared turnout, no shared equipment, and minimizing movement between quarantined and non-quarantined horses.
We will walk you through every step if quarantine becomes necessary.
