This month is National Train Your Dog Month!
Whether you train your dog yourself or have a trainer help guide you, keep these five skills in mind when first training.
1. Communication is key. Improved communication helps you and your dog strengthen your relationship. Consider using consistent commands and not full sentences.
2. Socialize your dog. Having your dog socialized will help prevent an anxious dog, allowing you to expose them to various environments without them being scared.
3. Have them leash trained. Training your dog to walk on a leash is an everyday necessity. In most areas, leash laws are enforced - but also help keep your dog close to your side and will help teach them to not pull or lunge.
4. House train your dog. Having a dog that notifies you when they have to go potty will make life easier! Consider using training bells, or teach them to go to the door when needing to go outside.
5. Start with basic commands. Training your dog basic commands is the building block before you move on to advanced commands. Sit, stay, down, and come, are basic commands that most dogs learn quickly.
