The Princess and the Frog 😍

Princess, the Andean Condor, has a new house guest! This handsome fellow, named Prince Naveen by the keepers, has taken up residence in the Condor building. Luckily, toads aren't on the menu for Princess, but we don't suggest he waits around for a kiss, either! 😄

Happy 1st Hatchday, Huey! 🥳

Huey is a laughing kookaburra, a species endemic to eastern Australia. Their unique call is used to announce their territory. They are the largest species of kingfisher. Huey lives next door to his parents, Sassy and Boomerang. His favorite activity is hunting for critters in his zoo habitat, like worms, frogs, and even snakes!

Check out his baby pictures! 😍

Happy 1st Birthday to our newest Zoo resident - Dr. Wallace!! 🥳

We are excited to announce the arrival of Dr. Stephen Wallace, a red panda! Dr. Wallace (a.k.a. Wally) arrived in May from Zoo Knoxville. He was named after the paleontologist who discovered red panda fossils in East Tennessee at the Gray Fossil Site. Those fossils were ancestors of red pandas in Asia.

Keepers say Dr. Wallace is curious and adventurous, and he loves checking out new furniture and enrichment. He also enjoys interacting with his new keepers, especially if he is receiving snacks!

Dr. Wallace can be seen daily in the rear panda yard, but he always has the choice to go into his building, so guests are encouraged to check back if they don’t see him. Ember, the zoo’s other red panda, can still be seen in the front panda yard. Based on the recommendations of the Red Panda Species Survival Plan (SSP) program, the next step is to introduce these two individuals in the near future! Aurora, the zoo’s former resident, has moved to another zoo, also based on a recommendation from the Red Panda SSP.

Happy 4th Birthday, Lucy and Ethel! 🥳

Lucy and Ethel are greater rheas, a species endemic to South America. Like ostriches, they are ratites - a group of birds that lack a keel and cannot fly. Instead, their powerful legs help them run to escape predators. Lucy is a fitness girlie and runs to her keepers every morning for her healthy breakfast. Ethel isn't much of a morning girl and will leisurely stroll over instead. However, both are willing to run a 5K for some yummy grapes! 🍇

Happy World Parrot Day! 🦜

Did you know: There are around 400 species of parrots! Besides being colorful and intelligent, parrots have a few traits in common, like a strong, curved beak for cracking nuts and seeds, and zygodactyl feet (two toes facing forward and two facing backward) for better grip while climbing. Almost 45% of parrot species are threatened with extinction. The pet trade and habitat loss are big factors affecting their populations. Join our zoo docents today at the parrot habitats from 11 am - 2 pm to learn more about these amazing birds! There'll be interactive activities, educational content, and giveaways!

Our zoo docents will be raising money today for Feathered Sanctuary Bird Rescue. They are a group of dedicated, caring volunteers that rescue, rehabilitate & rehome exotic parrots. ♥

Happy 11th Hatchday, Sassy! 🥳

Sassy is a Laughing Kookaburra, a bird species endemic to eastern Australia. They are in the kingfisher family and are related to our native Belted Kingfisher. They get their name from their unique "laughing" vocalization, which they use to establish territory. Sassy has been at the zoo since 2024 and has had one offspring since arriving with her mate, Boomerang.

Happy Alligator Day! 🐊🎉

You are probably familiar with our very well-known native species, the American Alligator, which resides in much of the southeastern US. However, we'd like to introduce you to the other alligator species - the Chinese alligator! This species is much smaller (only around 5 feet) and is critically endangered. At the Reptile House, you can come face-to-face with Fee, our resident Chinese alligator, in the summer. He is 31 years old and could live up to 70 years!

Meet George, Bill, and Spot! 🤝

These three handsome guys are white-tailed deer, New Jersey's native deer species. So why don't they look like the deer you've seen? They're leucistic! This condition is often confused with albinism. For albino animals, cells cannot produce melanin, the pigment responsible for dark coloration. So, an albino animal completely lacks dark pigmentation, and there are no "partial" albinos because all cells are affected equally. For a leucistic animal, all pigmentation is affected, not just melanin. Additionally, each cell may produce different amounts of pigmentation. This will manifest as an entirely white coat or a patchy coat, known as pie-bald, hence George, Bill, and Spot's unique coloration!
