At Dove Creek Equine Rescue, groundwork is about more than horses.

Leading builds confidence.
Grooming encourages mindfulness.
Lunging teaches communication.
Standing quietly reminds us how to regulate emotions and be present.

Sometimes the most meaningful groundwork isn’t about training the horse — it’s about what the horse teaches us in return. 🐴

Look at Leo now after arriving at the rescue in February!

Leo has settled into the herd well and is finding his place. Although he and Denali came in together and had been a pair for many years, herd dynamics naturally change over time, and both have started forming new friendships. Since arriving, Leo has also spent some time working on his ground manners and has made great progress.

Before Leo came to us, his previous owners shared that he had been diagnosed with ringbone. Since then, we have been carefully monitoring his comfort level, activity, and any signs of lameness. There have been a few occasions where he overdid it during playtime with the herd and was a little sore afterward.

Last week, we decided to evaluate how Leo handled light work under saddle. He did very well during a short, easy ride, which was encouraging to see.

Our next step is to take Leo in on Thursday for radiographs to better assess how progressive his ringbone may be and to get our veterinarian’s recommendations regarding possible injections or other supportive care options.

Leo is still a young horse, and we want to give him every opportunity for a happy, comfortable future. We will continue evaluating whether light riding is something he can safely enjoy long term. If riding is not in his best interest, Leo will be available as a companion horse instead.

We’re committed to making decisions based on what is best for Leo’s health and quality of life. Stay tuned for more updates on his journey.

This Memorial Day, we pause to remember the heroes who gave their lives in service to others.

Their courage, sacrifice, and selflessness will never be forgotten.

As we spend today with family, friends, and the animals we love, we do so because of them.

With gratitude,
Dove Creek Equine Rescue

If you see an equine that looks thin, injured, neglected, or in need… here’s what to do first ⬇️

We know it’s emotional. We feel it too.

But please remember: not every situation is exactly what it appears from the outside.

Sometimes owners are facing hardship, illness, financial struggles, lack of resources, or temporary emergencies. True neglect does happen, but whenever possible, we believe in leading with compassion first.

At Dove Creek, we work closely with local law enforcement and animal control and often help make first contact in a supportive, non-confrontational way. Many owners are more willing to accept education, resources, assistance, or surrender support before enforcement becomes necessary.

If you’re concerned about an equine’s welfare:

• Take photos or video only if it can be done safely and legally
• Note the location plus date and time
• Do not trespass or aggressively confront owners
• Send concerns and information directly to Ali McEwen
• If the animal is in immediate danger or it is a life-threatening emergency, contact local law enforcement immediately

Please remember: investigations, documentation, and legal removals take time.

The more information we have, the more effectively we can advocate.

Our goal is always the same:

Help horses. Help people when possible. Lead with compassion.

Thank you for being the eyes and ears for equines in our community.

Thank you!

Huge thank you to our Meet a Horse Day sponsors for helping make this event possible. Because of your support, hundreds of families were able to come out, meet the horses, learn about rescue, and spend a day connecting with our mission.

Events like this don’t happen without businesses and community partners willing to show up for the horses and the people who love them. We are so grateful for every sponsor who helped bring Meet a Horse Day to life.

Thank you for believing in Dove Creek, our programs, and the horses that call this place home. 🤍🐴
