CANTON DOG PARK TURF RESTORATION UPDATE:
As part of the overall Turf Restoration project that is currently underway, Canton Parks staff has made progress in the following areas as they continue to address turf condition challenges. To date, gravel has been added to the parking lot that was leveled and tampered to fill in and smooth out potholes. Staff has also completed the aeration of the entire dog park to assist with drainage issues, as well as help newly added seed take hold in the section that is currently closed and expected to reopen Monday, May 12. Once this section has re-opened, the middle fencing will be removed to provide just one larger area for large dogs that will, hopefully, eliminate excessive wear and tear in heavy traffic areas.
In the next several weeks, watch for gate and fence repairs to be made to address current gaps, as well as to strengthen and straighten sections to prevent potential breaches. Future projects will include the aeration and over-seeding of the entire park some time this fall, which will help with drainage, as well as improve bare spots and thinned areas of grass. Unfortunately, this will necessitate the closing of the entire dog park for proper turf restoration at a date that has yet to be determined but will be widely promoted. This full-park closure will be kept as short as possible to allow for necessary re-establishment of the grass.
Currently, staff is working with Canton Township engineers to determine pricing for future concrete installation of extended entry and exit areas, as well as for potential seating areas and shade structures. While funding has not been identified, this information will be crucial for budgeting to securing future financing.
