Enjoy National Dairy Month with your favorite dairy treat. Established to promote grocery/milk promotion in 1937 and to highlight the health benefits. Dairy products contain essential nutrients — including calcium, potassium, vitamin D, and protein. They also reduce the risk of high blood pressure, osteoporosis, and certain cancers, while helping us to better manage our weight.

Watch the Temperatures!
As temperatures rise, asphalt and pavement, artificial turf, sidewalks, and darker colored groundcover, especially in areas without shade, may be dangerously hot.
Before walking your dog, place the back of your hand on the ground and hold it there for 5-seconds. If the heat is unbearable, find another place to walk, outfit your pup with a pair of booties, or reschedule your walk for another time when the ground isn’t so hot.

Pet Safety Tips for Memorial Day Weekend
If you are celebrating Memorial Day this weekend, have fun, stay safe and keep your pets safe.
1. Identification (microchip or collar) in case your pet gets lost.
2. Watch the temperature outside. It can still get too hot for our pets especially the asphalt.
3. Keep sunscreen and bug spray away from them. Never apply sunscreen or insect repellent to your pet that is not labeled specifically for use on animals.
4. Keep matches and lighter fluid out of reach.
5. Feeding people food to your pets. Any changes to your pet’s diet can result in severe digestive ailments. Of course,no raisins, grapes, onions, chocolate and sugar-free products made with the sweetener xylitol, and never leave alcoholic beverages unattended where your pet can reach them.
6. Don't forget the hot grill.
7. If you have people over, make sure the visitors including children aren't causing your pet to be anxious.
8. Keep your pet in a quiet, sheltered and escape-proof area if there are fireworks.
9. Never leave your pets unsupervised around the water. Use a life jacket.

World Turtle Sea Day
Established by American Tortoise Rescue in 2000 to call attention to the turtle conservation community around the globe each year on May 23rd. We celebrate the diversity, beauty, and preservation of the 359 living species of turtles, tortoises, sea turtles, and terrapins found on Earth.

There are six sea turtle species found in U.S. waters, all of which are listed and protected under the Endangered Species Act. Learn more about sea turtles and the work of NOAA Fisheries and partners to protect and conserve these animals.

Clinical Trials Day on May 20, in recognition of what is often considered the start of the first randomized clinical trial. In 1747, James Lind began a clinical trial on this day to study the effects of different remedies for scurvy among sailors at sea. His research famously provided evidence of the benefits of citrus fruits to treat this disease. Clinical trials have undergone many changes since the time of James Lind, not only in respect to medical, scientific and technological advances, but also in terms of ethical and legal requirements. Regardless, clinical trials remain a critical part of drug development, as a means of generating evidence to support the regulatory decision-making for safe and effective new medicines.

Arthritis Awareness Month
In dogs, unlike humans, osteoarthritis actually tends to start at a young age. In cats, osteoarthritis is exceedingly common. The disease often goes undiagnosed and untreated in pets. They adapt their posture to continue daily living activities. Most will not cry/whine in pain from the osteoarthritis until it is beyond tolerable.
The pain has deleterious effects such as musculoskeletal deterioration, central sensitization, and cognitive and affective decline. All of these result in increased resistance to treatment.
Experts say earlier diagnosis and treatment are pivotal to managing both the pain and the progression of the disease. There are many possible treatments for our dogs and cats
Talk with your veterinarian about your pet and osteoarthritis.

A guide for pet parents on osteoarthritis in pets, including what the condition is, its signs, diagnosis, and treatment options.

Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month
Our pets can suffer from allergies and asthma. It can be difficult to recognize asthma or allergy symptoms. There can be different symptoms that occur in our cats and dogs often depending on what is causing the reaction. We typically see environmental or food allergies and sometimes a pet can have both.
Symptoms can include: Itching, licking, chewing, red irritated skin, hair loss, skin odor, ear infections, and hives.
For asthma, symptoms can include dry hacking cough, wheezing, open-mouth breathing, exercise intolerance, difficulty breathing, cyanotic gums, lethargic. Asthma can be life threatening if the pet is having difficulty breathing - seek medical help immediately.
There are many different treatments available to keep our pet comfortable. Talk with your veterinarian.
