Operation Goat Baby Rescue!
Last night, the man I found with a tracking dog searched for my neighbor, Sammie’s, five missing baby goats from about 10:30 PM until midnight, but there was no sign of them. We all went to bed sad, hoping for better luck today.
Sure enough, I woke to a text from Sharon, another neighbor just down the cove, saying that the babies had shown up in her driveway and a picture of them! Sharon was headed to church and Sammie was already out of town at a family function, so John and I got ready to go round them up.
Fortunately, Sharon, her husband, and her brother had already managed to get one baby into their pasture, where their donkey and sheep were keeping an eye on things. And thankfully, Katie (the breeder of three of the babies at Windy Hill Farm) showed up with backup, I think her parents, Traci and John. That gave us five people to wrangle five babies, plus Katie brought along two of the goat mommas for good measure.
When we got there, it took a little hunting around, as the babies had gotten all the way to the back of the pasture and into the woods. Luckily, by the time we arrived, one more baby had managed to get into the pasture, so two were inside and the other three were hanging out close by, just outside.
Since there wasn’t an easy way around, Katie climbed the fence and was able to sn**ch them and pass them over. Once all five were safely inside, we each grabbed a baby, loaded them into the pen in the back of the truck, and brought them home. Success!
Tired, muddy, scratched up, but all babies safe and sound. We are all so relieved. They are only 8–12 weeks old. When we left, they were all munching away, and one was already starting to fall asleep on her feet. They had quite the adventurous night! Their names are all Tim Burton inspired — Morticia, Wednesday, Gomez, Pugsley, and Lydia. 😊
Just another day in the cove with all us crazy animal lovers coming together. I’m sure it’ll be our turn to call for help soon enough; though luckily, no escaped mustang horses so far!
