Pekoe and his little hisses. ❤️

Remember Pekoe in a previous post?
Pekoe, I love you so!! He let me reach in and pet with little hisses. A major improvement of when he was previously telling me to back way off. He is still afraid and has larger then him warnings, to back off. After this pet he said, ok I am done and went off to play with his siblings. Pekoe is off to another great rescue where another foster loves these little ones.

A kitten or adult cat does not deserve to be this afraid. Or have to struggle to survive outside. Please spay/neuter your cats.
Thank you for caring!!

Remember Dair from a previous post and in our newsletter? He came to us thru our TNVR program. He was in so much pain due to entropion of both eyes and he also has smaller eyes. For a year he has been in pain. Well with your donations JJ’s was able to schedule surgery. It has been a success. He keeps his little peepers open all the time. Of course except when he sleeps. Oh and the challenges of keeping a cone on him or in this case a bit of toast. Thank you!

Overpopulation of cats and kittens is overwhelming rescues. JJ’s has more than 67 kittens waiting to be rescued. This does not include adults. Our Volunteers already are fostering. This is a very stressful and sad time to try and rescue kittens and cats. Most are left behind to fend for themselves.

Please, please, spay/neuter your cats. JJ’s has low cost vouchers and a TNR program. Visit our website for information. Let’s be proactive.

Meet Sarina and her babies!!

Our TNR team came across a challenging colony. Without the help of the caretaker these babies may have had a different ending.

We knew there were babies. Itty bitty babies. The adults were all black, so who was mom. We knew the babies survival depended on mom taking care of them. Eileen took home one mom to see if she would take care of them. Nope no interest. Took home another one and she struck gold. Sarina was the mom. She is such a good momma.

JJ’s motto is not to pull the babies before they can be weaned and NEVER leave the momma without her being spayed. Oh, by the way mom is not social but did let Eileen handle the kittens. Several people worked Together to get this colony ALL spayed and neutered.

A big part of JJ’s volunteer work in Fremont County is our trap, neuter, vaccinate, and return program of feral/ community cats. JJ’s has been providing this program to Fremont County for many years. Many times JJ’s volunteers are first responders to sick kittens and cats needing immediate medical attention. Please consider donating to JJ’s Helping Paws. It takes a village.

Say Hi Rori!! Rori recently arrived at JJ’s thru a TNR colony. She couldn’t see but could smell food and was very hungry. We were worried about her baby blues. The right eye was filled with puss. Thank goodness her eye was ok. Rori and her three siblings are in foster. Liz and Joel are working wonders with them. They are still unsure about all the love they are getting. Stay tuned for updates.

Please, please spay and neuter your cats. If you feed them, FIX them. This little one may not have made it without medical care.

Dirty Kitty Litter : A Questionable Cause Fallacy - Kat Albrecht - MARN

Here's a blog post by MARN Founder Kat Albrecht-Thiessen that discusses what is wrong with telling cat owners to spread dirty cat litter outside as a method to bring their lost cat back home.

Telling cat owners to put out a dirty kitty litter box, well is just not sound advice. When it creates false hope and promotes inaction by cat owners.

A Happy Moment - Meet Astrid!!
Astrid magically appeared at someone’s home, hungry and tame. When she arrived she escaped from her carrier. Oh no JJ’s thought, where will she go. We pulled out the trail camera’s. Hurray!! Astrid was still around and being very cautious.

Suzanne a volunteer with JJ’s started monitoring the cameras and tracking her habits. Out came the humane traps. Suzanne worked on catching this girl for over three weeks. She had to be aware of still being able to feed the others, in the colony. Her diligence paid off Astrid decided she wanted to be loved. Just in time as she is very pregnant. Astrid will be in foster until she has her babies and will be spayed. No more being outside and afraid.

Please spay/neuter!!

JJs Helping Paws would like to thank Sharon McComb for donating 2 feline snoozers for our cats to use at Molly's place. They are going to be so easy to keep clean and the cats are going to love them!!

We still need a lot of supplies for the shelter. One great way to donate things we need is to go to our Chewy wish list. https://www.chewy.com/g/jjs-helping-paws-inc_b73588483

**An update on this situation**
JJ's Helping Paws volunteers arrived this morning to evaluate the situation. The owner of the cat was very agitated and seemed quite angry. She did not want our help and told us to leave. One of our volunteers was treated VERY rudely. We hope the cat will come out of the tree very soon. We are still willing to help if needed. Thank you all for your suggestions and for caring. Thank you Preston for being willing to come and help.

There is a kitty in need that we are hoping someone out there can help. It has been in a tree for 5 days now. Animal control will not help and neither will the fire department. Anyone out there know of someone that has a ladder or bucket that could go up high enough to get to this poor cat??

Three words of advice for reaching out to animal rescuers: assume the best.

Assume that if you’re reaching out to someone who does animal rescue, you’re reaching out to someone who has a huge heart. Assume that they care deeply about saving lives. Assume that if they don’t respond to you right away, or at all, it’s because they’re so busy helping animals. Assume that you’re the 10th, 20th, or 100th person to reach out to them today asking for help. Assume that if they can’t help you, it’s because they are already at max capacity. Assume that you do not know or see a fraction of what is on their plate. Assume that they might be exhausted. Assume that they might be grieving, or tender. Assume that they are a loving, kind person who is a source of good for the world. Assume that they are worthy of being treated with consideration and respect. Assume that they are human.

Because 9 times out of 10, if you assume these things about an animal rescuer, you will be right. So when you reach out to an animal rescuer, let your words be filled with gratitude, patience, and understanding. Don’t use your words to jab at animal rescuers for not being available enough, not doing more, not “caring,” not being able to single-handedly save the world. Treat animal rescuers with compassion, not just when they can help you, but even—and especially—when they can’t. And when they can’t, don’t assume the worst. Assume the best.

Just a quick rant...... Please people spay and neuter your pets!!!! I just received my fifth call this week from somebody that got a cute kitten did not get her fixed, she accidentally got out and of course at 5 months of age she has given birth to four kittens and they are moving in 4 days! There are a ton of low-cost spay neuter options available here on the shore! If you can Google anything, you can Google low-cost spay neuter in our area!!!! This situation could have been prevented and why do people wait till the last minute to call to say they cannot take their animals with them? I have 26 people ahead of this person waiting for my help! This is not a cat overpopulation problem this is a human problem!!!! Sorry folks I'm just so angry I could spit nails because these kittens should never have been born to a mother who is still a kitten herself, & and now because it's inconvenient they call a rescue and think we can just take them off their hands and solve their problem and the lady already gave away one of the kittens to somebody so this is going to start the cycle all over again! I feel sometimes I'm in the middle of the ocean trying to drain it one teaspoon at a time ! It's exhausting, it's overwhelming and frustrating!!! We just finished from a horrible hoarding situation and now this!!! We try to help as many people as we can but everyone needs to step up to the plate here!!!!

Barn cats don't just lie around and eat. They are active protectors of their environment. Our 'barn queen, Sally, sent a full grown bobcat packing last night. Keep up the good (no, great) work.
This handsome kitty has been hanging in my neighborhood for about 2 months. Not sure if male or female - but "he" follows me around when I go outside and talks my leg off... He is shy of touch right now, but I think he would warm up quite well with a little more attention. I did manage to stroke his back a bit - and he seems very boney under all that fur. He has taken to staying in my yard pretty much all the time - which is a huge problem with my own pets - as he picks on my old dog, and she is a rescue and afraid of her shadow.. I've posted on the local lost & found pet pages, but I think this guy has been abandoned... Called FCSO animal control and she will not pick him up. I am at a loss for where to turn to get this guy some help. I have no idea where he sleeps at night, but during the day he stays pretty much in or around my yard. Someone referred me to this page. Just looking for help in finding this guy a forever home where someone can care for him.. and my pets can have their yard back. I don't think it would take much to tame him down again, as he seems to look for companionship. Any help would be very much appreciated
