October 3rd, Saturday 2026 is Balsam’s Arts & Crafts Show at the Balsam Community Center!!!

Last year was a beautiful display of handmade crafts of all sorts, a large variety of baked goods, wonderful holidays gifts and lots more! We couldn’t help but tour the other tables and make a few purchases of the cookies and cakes 😍 the vendors were so creative and wonderful people and we can’t wait to head there again this year!

We hope to see you there!

One moment everything is totally fine. Some clouds, a little wind, it’s a beautiful day! You get halfway to the chicken coop to drop off watermelon rinds and a storm suddenly starts barreling down.

This is where I say “oh well” and run through the rain but I was tired 😑 It had already been an extensive day on the farm. It was hot, humid, I’d already changed clothes multiple times just to get a break from the sloppy wetness of the marsh that my yard feels like it is!

I didn’t want to deal with it and the rain showed no signs of letting up. Luckily, a farm means family here so a quick call and I had a ride coming to grab me and avoid most of the rain.

My point is, when you’re busy and have a long day you don’t have to go barreling through the rain. Sometimes you can call for some help and save yourself just a little bit of hassle and struggle

Daily goat video! The goats were pretty full from a late evening feeding and didn’t care much for feeding time today SO here they are invading their barn!

If goats could talk, I’m sure they’d have the wittiest conversations, playful banter, and witty repartee….right? Look into those eyes and tell me you don’t see deep thinking and sophistication seeping out.

No 😂 they would be constantly freaking out about anything happening around them. The more I watch them, the more I’m certain of it 😂 the fight or flight response is strong in these goats.

Another day, another storm 😬

Halfway through afternoon chores and suddenly this Tempest comes barreling through.

No hat, no raincoat, I’d already changed clothes twice today, I wasn’t feeling it 🙄

Thought maybe it’s a quick Passover and it’ll be gone soon. 5 minutes later and the storm is worse, so I call the family for help and get a ride from the sawmill I’m hiding out at 🤣

I got “most”of my list done, animals didn’t escape, gardens didn’t drown and the phone still works! So it’s another win 💪

Daily Goat Feeding 🐐

It’s a stormy one today so chores are getting done early 😬 Balancing the workflow, farm life, and kids back to school is going to be the real challenge for the next several days BUT it will get done 😤

Was really hoping to have a lot more done this week but the high humidity and on/off rain has really put a damper on plans. Hey it’s a farm, you work in rain or shine but your fencing posts do not sit well if the ground is sopping wet and mud 😅 maybe next week 👍

The Christmas Trees are thriving, Gardens are watered 🤷, chickens are quiet, the goats are upset but fed (storm) and anxiety is my drive this week 💪 still a win!

Goats are deeply emotional, highly social animals that display signs of empathy and form strong affectionate bonds with both other animals and humans. Goats can distinguish between happy and angry human facial expressions and prefer positive interactions.

Research shows goats can pick up on emotional shifts in other goats' vocalizations, and hearing happy bleats can change their own physiological state.

They look to humans for help when facing a problem rather than giving up. They frequently huddle and pile together to comfort and warm one another.
