🧊What’s the difference between icing an injury and using cryotherapy? ❄️💨
Cryotherapy and icing injuries are both cold therapies, but they are used in different ways and affect the body differently.
The main purpose of icing is to reduce swelling, numb pain, and slow down blood flow to that particular spot. It is a simple and common first-aid treatment that targets one small area of the body for a short period of time, typically about 15–20 minutes.
Cryotherapy, on the other hand, is a broader treatment that exposes the body to extremely cold temperatures for a short amount of time, often using specialized equipment such as localized cryotherapy devices. Instead of just treating one injured spot, cryotherapy can affect larger areas or even the entire body. It is often used by athletes and in medical or wellness settings to help reduce inflammation, promote muscle recovery, and improve circulation after the body warms back up.
While icing is mainly a basic home treatment for injuries, cryotherapy is a more advanced therapy , typically lasting for longer periods of time and improving performance/wellness results.
