I am getting a new veterinary assistant soon!! For those of you who don’t know I am expecting a baby in a couple weeks. I will be taking some time off prior to his arrival and in the weeks after.

Please be understanding if I don’t reply to messages right away but if you are looking to schedule an appointment for routine care you can still reach out and I will get you on the schedule for when resume appointments.

Some may have seen a post that I started at a clinic in Skaneateles and I’m happy to say I’ve started a new position.

I wanted to answer a couple questions I didn’t have complete answers to last night.

1) How long after biting before a tick can transmit disease?

- Most sources say it takes 24-48 hours to transmit disease (esp for Lyme disease) but other sources say it take just a few hours. The New York Dept of Health says that Powassan virus can be transmitted in as little as 15 minutes.

(Overall there is not “one answer” to that question and there seem to be a lot of factors that play into transmission time)

2) Is there a human Lyme vaccine?

-There is currently a clinical trial through Pfizer and Valneva for a Lyme vaccine. We will have to wait and see the outcome of the trail and if this vaccine will eventually become available for the general population.
