Baby Morticia, born on 2/21/2026, is here to tell you that foal season is one of the most exciting times of year — but those first few days are also some of the most important for a foal’s health and future! 🐴🍼

Here are a few basic foal care reminders every horse owner should know:

✨ A healthy foal should:
• Stand within 1 hour
• Nurse within 2 hours
• Pass meconium within 3 hours

✨ Don’t forget:
• A newborn exam is always recommended
• IgG testing helps ensure adequate colostrum intake and immunity transfer
• Watch closely for diarrhea, lethargy, coughing, or difficulty nursing
• Clean, dry bedding and a safe turnout environment are essential

Those early days matter — quick recognition of problems can make all the difference. If you ever have concerns about your mare or foal, don’t hesitate to call your veterinarian! 💙

🟢 May is Lyme Disease Awareness Month 🟢

In the Southeast, ticks are a fact of life—and while Lyme disease often gets the spotlight, horses in our region can be exposed to a variety of tick-borne concerns. That makes prevention, awareness, and early recognition especially important.

Spring is a great time to:

✔ Check horses routinely for ticks
✔ Keep pastures and turnout areas managed
✔ Talk with your veterinarian about tick-borne disease risks in our region

A little vigilance goes a long way in protecting your horse’s health. 🐴

🏆 Barn Buddy March Madness Champion Crowned! 🏆

This year’s bracket challenge started with one simple question: What’s your favorite horse color and gender combination? From there, our Barn Buddy March Madness tournament was born—and after the upsets, suspense, and stable-side debates… a black gelding took the title! 🐴

And our champion predictor? 🎉 Clarissa, who called black gelding from the very beginning!

Congratulations to our Barn Buddy March Madness winner, and thanks to the team for making even the offbeat moments around the office fun. We may take horses seriously… but we also take our brackets seriously. 😄

Did your favorite combo make the finals? Tell us below!

Note: the horse pictured is not black, but Clarissa is indeed our winner 🎉

Celebrating the Guardians🐴🩺

Today is World Veterinary Day, and we’re shining a spotlight on our incredible equine veterinarians who keep our horses healthy, happy, and performing at their best.

Being an equine vet isn't just a job—it’s a calling that requires grit, patience, and a deep understanding of these powerful animals. From routine wellness exams and emergency calls in the middle of the night to advanced sports medicine and neonatal care, their expertise is the backbone of the horse industry.

Why we’re thankful for our equine vets:

💙They are advocates for those who cannot speak for themselves.
🐎They are athletes' doctors, ensuring peak performance and recovery.
🐴They are there for the milestones, from the first foal steps to the golden years.

Thank you for everything you do!

With a locally confirmed rabies-positive raccoon (https://tinyurl.com/2au7thu7), now is an important reminder to make sure your horses are up to date on their vaccines — especially rabies.

Rabies is a fatal disease that can affect all mammals, including horses, and exposure can happen more easily than many realize through wildlife encounters. Vaccination is a simple, effective way to protect your horse, your barn family, and the people who care for them.
If you're unsure when your horse was last vaccinated, now is a great time to check and schedule an update. Prevention is always the best protection.

Stay safe, stay protected, and as always — we’re here if you have questions. 🐴💉

Two horses in Kershaw County were exposed to a rabid raccoon, officials at the South Carolina Department of Public Health confirmed.

🌞🐴 Hot, Dry Weather & Your Horse: What to Watch For 🐴🌞

With the recent stretch of hot, dry weather, it's important to remember that these conditions can take a toll on our horses in more ways than one.

Dry heat can quickly lead to dehydration, especially when horses are sweating more and may not be drinking enough to keep up. Even mild dehydration can affect performance, digestion, and overall comfort.

Here are a few things to keep in mind during hot, dry conditions:

☀️ Increased Risk of Dehydration
Horses can lose significant fluids through sweat. Make sure fresh, clean water is always available and consider adding electrolytes when appropriate.

🌾 Dry Pastures = Reduced Grazing
When grass dries up, horses may not be getting enough forage. This can lead to weight loss, behavioral changes, or even increased risk of ulcers. Supplementing with quality hay may be necessary.

💨 Dust & Respiratory Concerns
Dry footing, arenas, and pastures create more dust, which can irritate airways — especially for horses prone to respiratory issues.

🐴 Impaction Colic Risk
Dehydration combined with dry forage can increase the risk of impaction colic. Ensuring adequate hydration and fiber intake is key.

🔥 Heat Stress
Even horses that are used to warm weather can struggle when heat and dryness persist. Watch for lethargy, decreased appetite, or reduced performance.

Helpful Tips:
• Provide shade whenever possible
• Offer multiple water sources
• Consider soaking hay or feed for added hydration
• Ride during cooler morning or evening hours
• Monitor manure consistency and water intake

A little extra attention during hot, dry spells can go a long way in keeping your horse comfortable, healthy, and performing their best.

Stay cool out there — and give your horses an extra check today. 💙🐴
